This was the caterpillar on the toothbrush in my macro submission. I was hoping to catch it coming out of the chrysalis, but it happened while I was asleep. Unfortunately, she also fell out and wasn't able to hang back up to dry her wings. One of them ended up being bent so she wasn't able to fly :(

The butterfly really wanted to fly and actually fluttered around my room a few times. I fed it some apple juice and then left it in the yard hoping it would find a way to fly off. Unfortunately, we found its wings scattered on the ground the next day :( I think it was attacked by yellowjackets.
You can see in the picture where I had glued the chrysalis to the branch because it had fallen. I also had to break off the end of the stick because it kept wanting to climb to tip, and I couldn't get the chrysalis in the shot.
I have some shots of it with better lighting on the wings and a totally black background. This one just had more detail. the wings and body don't show up as well on a black background ;P
Thanks for the votes and comments! It actually took longer than normal to eclose ... which was good because the perfect challenge came along.
I also missed the eclosion of the caterpilars form the off-center challenge. They turned out to be huge ugly moths and became the farorite prays for the neighborhood's cats.
Nicely composed image. congratulations
That monarch is beautiful! I hope you got to watch the process happen right before snapping this picture. Lighting is good, composition is good. Nice idea for the challenge.
Nice bug shot. End of stem on which butterfly is sitting seems overexposed. Nice idea, but I'm afraid you're going to get some "Not another bug shot" comments.
A Monarch Butterfly, my favorite. We did this one year at the Science Center where I worked and it was an amazing thing to watch. Did you get to see it come out?
The colors are wonderful, the cropping is wonderful and having the cocoon in the shot, knowing that HUGE butterfly came out of that tiny little vessle is so well done. I am having a hard time finding fault with this shot at all. My 6th 10 this challenge, well done.
nice capture - always hard to believe they could emerge from such a tiny container...a little dark on the butterfly wings but overall a good response to challenge
Nice photo, I wish the colors were a little more vivid, with the light coming through the wings more or something similar. Just a bit darker than I like. The butterfly and the broken cocoon tell a story and fit the challenge well. 6
