thankyou for the comments, i am pleased to hear the different views people have on this image as it is reaction i was hoping for. As far as cropping out the shodows go i would not think of doing that because if the shadows were not there i would not have taken this photo, i was drawn to the way that the shadows "framed" the alley. In regards to "not having a centre of interest" for me the alley itself is the subject.

this area is my favorite place photograph, the people I meet here are so very interesting and these streets are forever changing.

I think you could be right Crystal, on looking at this image again I feel if the interest was mainly on the light areas (cropping the dark left side out) then the trash cans wouldnt actually look out of place...definitely an interesting area and somwhere you could find lots of interesting subjects!

Lovely light on the graffiti. I would have taken at least a couple of steps forward here so that the foreground was not all shadow and you lost the uninteresting bins (trash cans?) on the right handside. I think the doorway with the graffiti surrounding it makes a fantastic subject on its own and I'd like to see it a little closer up :o) Is this a place you can revisit?

there really no center of interest here, and none of the individual elements really has much visual weight. There's good detial in the shadows without having the rest blown out, but overall nothing that really draws me in here. I think it just that it all competes too much, I think the wall/door would be a pretty entertaining shot, and the trashcans by themselves, or the shadowed wall. it's just too much to tell in one pic, they each need their own. Maybe a tryptich of the alley with features highlighted would present the full scene better for the viewer.

I really like the way you handled the light and shadow -- there are still some details in the dark area. This is one alley I wouldn't want to go down. '0
