You can not get any older than this very large piece of rock in our night skies! Photos have been taken of the various phases of the moon for more than 40 days (July / August). On July 20th, 2002, it was 33 years ago since the Apollo 11 crew landed.
Shot using a Nikkor 1000 mm f11.0 catadioptric lens, with an old Nikon x2 convertor, on a Nikon D1X camera. Effectively creating a x60 magnification (digital CCD x1.5, plus 2000 mm of optical magnification).
Shot exposed in the "fine" / "large" JPEG mode (3008 x 1960), with centre-weighted metering, on a tripod with a cable release. Resized and cropped.

You can wax it in a couple of weeks. Why did you trim part of it away? Nice job on the BLACK sky!!! By the way, isn't this moon only about 23 days old?---10
Okay, you have to know that this picture totally rocks! Only thing...I wish that it hadn't have been cropped quite so close on the bottom. But this is definately a 10. Great job :) !!!!!!
This was my original idea...Unfortunately, I could not get a good shot of the moon and I don't have a telescope so, I abandoned that idea on Thursday....Great photo :)
Very nice choice of subject. Maybe a little less cropping on the bottom and sharper/more focused details. I'll give you an 8 because I'm jealous of whatever zoom lens you have. Can't wait to see the technical details.
NICE! The cropping in this is great. Yeah, you're a show-off with that great telephoto lens of yours....haha says the envious onlooker. Guess you get NO. 1 for OLDEST! Wonderful work. 9 Ruthann
I like the subject. I had this idea, too ;-) A little more sharpening would have been better. The composition also could be better for my taste. Either zoom even more in or zoom a little out so that the edges aren't cut.
Are you the one who commented on the moon in the forum of the Something Old thread :) Very cool picture! And it sure is old! I marvel at the clarity of the texture.
