We didn't have any rain this week, but I wasn't about to let a little detail like that stop me from entering.
This was a PAIN IN THE NECK. I tried the same concept last year, but at least this version turned out better. I went back after this and tried a slower shutter speed on the water (and I wanted to show her feet, too), but my lighting just wasn't as good). The water was pretty darn cold, and I couldn't really take the time to get it right for obvious reasons (that expression wasn't acting).
The setup was simple: my wife is on the ground shooting a garden hose up into the umbrella from behind. I shot this in a neighbor's sheep pasture (please watch your step) with a brolly box on the right side to light my daughter, and a monolight with an umbrella at back left to light up the water. A circular polarizer helped keep the sky dark. Maybe too dark. :-/
Not much editing here... cropped, Channel Mixer, USM, HSL and Levels.

very creative. However, the top half of the photo depicts no rain...I see you imporvised but perhaps if you would of gotten some top spray it would appear that it was raining...nice creativity , congrats on another winner.
I love the humor & concept. That's a Good Sport you have there! Thanks for the "out-of-the-box" thinking that will help me next time around when I don't have rain on the "right" days. :)
Great shot. I wonder why 21 people (6%) voted this 4 or below? Would be good if the top 5% and bottom 5% were discarded when working out averages. Anyway congratulations on the 2nd place.
Edit
I worked out average scores removing the top and bottom 5% and then 10% and the score only rose by less than 0.1 in both cases so I guess the low scorers are balanced out by the high scorers!
This is a great shot, it reminds me of my daughter when I use her in my shots. This made me chuckle.. tell her I think she is a great sport for helping her dad!
i'm speachless. just when i think your shots can't get any more creative, you outdo yourself. just another reason as to why you're one of my, and 238904723947 other people's, favorite photographer.
I knew this was going to score high when I saw it, brilliant as always! Now go buy this girl a present she deserves it after this ordeal :) ah and congratulations, well deserved ribbon!
Congrat´s, you are really starting to breath up Kiwi´s neck aren´t ya, as far as I can see it´s 26-24 for him at the moment and he´s not posting, keep at it!
great image and my favourite in the challenge Shannon...man, you are on a roll mate...I am glad that you included your explanation...your daughter deserves a new iPod for this, and perhaps a new puppy dog!
The photo is very busy with those trees but damn you more than made up for it with such a fantastic idea. This should have scored MUCH higher, IMO. Congrats.
Great shot Scalvert! I just couldnt get the hose water to look right in mine - maybe I should have taken the spray nozzle off huh? Well done on red ribbon - was my top choice for the challenge. Oh and GO UNTOUCHABLES!
That is an AMAZING shot I love the two light sources, that's a professional setup and it shows good planning and execution. It really bugs me that it's centred. Not because that's a "rule" but because it's composition is "off" a little, there is more impact available there which is the only reason it gets a 9 instead of 10
Great way to capture the rain! I love how her dress stands out against all the black and grey! She should be inside having fun and it looks like that is where she would rathter be!!! Crisp and sharp, Awesome job... 10!
Interesting turn of events. The fact that what's happening is the opposite of what's expected keeps your attention. Oh, and your model...Great job! She looks miserable!
I love the fact it only looks like it is raining under the umbrella. Also glad the stick of the umbrella is not right in the middle of her face. Nice shot.
Marty
Back to comment - I am really looking forward to seeing how you accomplished this. I tried several times for something similar and I just couldnt get the water to look right. Nice job with the water and the lighting. One of my favs of the challenge. Well done and Bumping up.
Fantastic idea! I was thinking something similar but never got around to trying it. I like that you use a younger subject, I think it works quite well for the playful mood. I question your choice of background, though your excellent lighting keeps the focus on your main subject. Nice job! 8o)
Very nice! I almost moved on thinking "average" until I looked twice and noticed the rain from under the umbrella - what a great idea! it's a shame that the right-hand side seems to be unbalanced with regard to the amount of water shown
Oh. Man. Who else could have shot this? I think there should just be an automated script that gives Scalvert a 10 on each challenge. That would save me all this extra effort each time :)
Awesome - I had a similar idea but this kicks the butt of mine. The background and lighting is great - I would love to see more versions of this too. Such a great image.
Haha. That's great! Her clothing is very bright compared to the dark background and that doesn't help to convey the emotion of frustration or depression one would be feeling in her situation. I still like it.
