The intricate details of roots when they are exposed in paths etc are wonderful. A good photo of the roots can imply a whole vast tree without showing a leaf. I wish there was more light (and therefore more detail) in your photo.
This is really a bit too dark. Maybe with a little dodging you could have brought out some more details and make this more evocative of a mood. The light is really too flat to make it very interesting. Try it again with a side light or some such thing to make the texture of the wood stand out.
