This photo was taken at a flag football scrimmage. The boy in the foreground is too young too play so is forced to watch his older brother play, at the same time wishing he could be allowed to play.

Thanks for all the comments on this photo. I was hoping to get in the top 10 with this, but that's all right because from everyone's comments, it successfully represented the emotion it was meant to represent. I guess part of the success is this being real and not staged.
I really loved the look and feel of this shot, I'm so glad you placed well! Its not what you typically think of when you are told "action of sports" but it says so much more, that I can't help but be drawn to it.
Very emotive picture.Beautiful composition. The depth of field is incredible. I like how the boy is wearing black and your eyes automatically focus on him. It really brings him to the foreground. This is definitely a ribbon winner.
Fine image and story.
One tip I will give you though (if you are using photoshop) is not to change the mode of your photo to grayscale but leave it in RGB. Go into the Image - Adjustments - Channel Mixer menu, select "monochrome" and start moving around the sliding cursors until you get an optimal range of grays. In this image the lawn texture and tone would be improved a lot by darkenig in the green channel.
I am sure this will eventually make sense to you.
This is a cute interpretation of the challenge, and it does have to do with sports, although there isn't much action being caught here, I like the feeling that this boy is out, while the others are in, and it tells the story of how sports are for young kids. I liked your composition a lot, and I feel that black and white was the right choice for this photo. Not extremely exciting but nice all the same.
This was just "BAM" to me. I love this shot. you located the young man so well, his clothing is a nice contrast to the rest of the image. Your use of B&W and the overall tone was just a part of all that works for me. The DOF, again was also done very well. I may not do the best job taken shots but I think I know when I see when someone else has. 10...10...10!
A well composed, emotional image. Having only the one boy in focus and choosing monochrome adds to the effect. The lighting is perfect, casting a shadow just the right angle and length.
What is REALLY cool about this pic, is the boy (subject) is dressed in black (or blue?) and really stands out nicely from the others. To make it even better, you should have used a larger aprature (less DOF) to make the kids in the background a little more blurry.
I absolutely love this image. The posture of your poor protagonist is perfect, and his dark clothing and long, lonesome shadow add to the distance from the other children. I hope you listed this one as "emotive." Awesome photo, and I hope he got to play.
Nice shot. I like the open foreground and the sense of space between the main subject and the kids playing. I think it might help to crop a bit more from the top, right about at the bottom of the deck railing. That would eliminate some of the busy detail in the background.
