Hi Arnthor. Looks like the voters were relatively happy with this photo but there were a few with criticisms amonst the comments.
It is to me a photo of two halves. With the fill flash fired out front it makes the lower half seem like night time whilst the waves and the hillside indicate early morning in the top half. It just doesn't seem balanced in that regard. Maybe you could of cut the flash back a stop?
The scene itself I think is fantastic but the horizon is leaning to the right. The patterns in the sand and the water along the shore add a lot of character to the shot. You've used a nice depth of field to keep the focus throughout the photo and it looks crisp and sharp.
Overall you did a nice job on this but the horizon, as I have learnt, will always get criticised if it's slightly skewiff and will cost votes. You've got some amazing photos in your portfolio and even though this finished below your average it's still a great effort. Well done and best of luck with future challenges.
Great job! A very nice photo with a couple of things to draw me back with the scoring. First, the good things. I liked the continuity of the color of the sky and water. I liked the clarity of the grains of sand. I loved the vicious movement of the crashing wave. What I didn't like was the fact that the highlight around the rock in the foreground makes the photo look like you are standing in a hole when you took it. Just an optical illusion I'm sure, as a result of the highlight. Secondly, I don't like how the remnants of the waves appear to be forces, and look like white lines (between the stone and the water line). But you have met the challenge without leaving me to have to figure out how you met the theme. I appreciate that. Raising my original score from a 5 to a 6.
Nice try, but ... fill flash too strong in forground (almost gives it a split view with the dark band before the water) ... and the horizon is skewed! Generally a good idea but needs a little work. Composition too rigid and doesn't flow.
What an interesting shot. I have looked and looked at this picture and still can't quite figure it out. The forground looks like it has fill-in flash or a spot light. To me this gives the appearance that the forground is on an uphill slope to the water's edge. Very strange.
This is very cool! Did you use a flashlight or something in the foreground? Whatever it is, it gives it a great effect. Crooked horizon, but I can see how it might have been hard to crop without cutting off some of the foreground. Good luck!
This has tons of potential that I do not think are quite realized. There is nothing special about the object in the foreground and it is directly centered. I think it is more of a distraction than a help in this case. The light is great. Maybe a more horizontal view with a bit more of the rocks on the right and a straighter horizon. Try it again- I am sure you can do it better!
Nice! Somehting about the flash bugs me....but I think I know what you were trying to do here....I think the reflection of the sky on the water "trails" on the edge of the surf (or what ever you want to call them) is way more beautiful than this shell object...:)
I tend to prefer natural lighting of natural scenes, but this looks interesting...I wonder if a landscape orientation would have been better here...probably should have fixed the horizon before submitting, too
This is really an interesting shot, and defintely one of the more creative entries. The tilted horizon is always a distraction. The harsh light on the sand also detracts from the overall shot. But for not having to look at another sunset or frollicking kids and for tackling what looks like a pretty difficult shot to capture I'm giving it a 7.
This shot has potential. I like the mid section in the transition zone between foamy water and dryer sand. And foreground lighting emphasizes the texture. Crop out the sky almost down to the top of the waves on left and shadowsed rock on right..
