I had taken another shot for this challenge of some ranier cherries. The shot came out beautiful IMO but lacked any real abstract quality. My wife was struggling with her shot and it got me thinking of something different. I decided to go with sliced zucchini on a white plate with red poster board background. I shot it outside before the sun totally came up overthe trees so I didnt have to deal with any harsh lighting or shadows.
PP - crop, saturation adjustment, levels, dodging and burning, minor cloning, USM, selective blur, NI, border, save for web.
Post Challenge - Doh - Tied with 10th place. And go figure I bumped him up to boot. Very pleased with my placing. This did much better than would the shot I originally had in (Ranier in my portfolio). Just pleased as punch to be mingling with those around me as many I admire greatly. Thanks all!

Great use of complementary colors and composition. Suits the challenge very well. It seems to me, though, the lighting is so even that the zucchini appears to be two-dimensional. It's almost as if you are making a photo of a photo. (...not that there's anything wrong with that.) I like the crop and the proportions of paper, plate and food. As an abstract this does very well (of course as a top 10 you already knew that). The only thing this photo lacks is the dip. Mmmmmmmmm, delicious.
(I checked Ranier out. I agree with your assessment.)
Congrats on the top ten! You're just a DPC machine these days... :-) Very clean and crisp, good color contrast, and a pleasing geometric image. Good job slicing the cucumbers as well. Great shot for the challenge, but from a photography perspective, I much prefer the one you didn't enter.
I loved this picture from the beginning ... the light, colours and composition are superb. It was one of my favorites for this challenge, and in my opinion it should have finished higher. Good job!! :-)
