I'll bet you're wondering why your butterfly came in 6th and another butterfly came in first.
Your shot is composed very well. The square crop and main subject placement are very pleasing. As for the bokeh effect, there's not really any out of focus highlights, but then there wasn't any in the top finisher either.
There's not much to critique in this top 10 image. If I had to pick something that made a difference between this one and the top finisher it is the background. Yours a bit busy and fights for attention from the butterfly, albeit only slightly. The blade of grass coming in from the top is a bit on the over exposed side. I would have burned it down in the editing.
Other than that, congratulations on your top 10 finish, and your new personal best by a long shot!
I hope this was helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
This shot was really tough, as it was taken inside the Detroit Zoo's Butterfly Exhibit. It's hot in there and the Butterflies are zipping around like they have had to much caffeine..
Plus, there's lot's of people around at all times...
I took about 15 shots in there and this one came out the best.
Great Shot ,but I found Your background too messy. If it had been possible I think that you should have cut out the leaf going right across the picture which would have given your butterfly more space and the bright leaf coming into the frame from the top which I found very distracting.I know these things are not easy to do at the time but I always cary a small pair of scissors.
Congrats on top ten placing.
Heh, looks like you have a fan on the comment below. Congrats on the Top 10, sorry it just missed 5th! I saw this shot and thought it was quite good. Anytime I see a comparable shot to the one I enter I worry. This one had me worried a lot.
AWWW...u should've been a winner!! No disrespect to Dr. Achoo, but your butterfly was so much better!! And I loved the bokeh background!! Congrats on your top ten!!
There were quite a few flowers, bugs and butterflies in this challenge but I thought this one stood out. The contrast of colors, blue and green in the background and black red of the butterfly were very nice.
This is beautiful in terms of the colours - but also quite stunning in terms of the long leaves. You did well on the DOF. It must have been fairly difficult to compose. 8.
I love the soft feel of this shot. The colors work well together and your bokeh really makes your butterfly stand out so much more! Congrats..9 from me!
