I love the different textures of his feathers, constasting with his eye and beak. This owl was to tame it wanted to jump on me! I did not trust that beak and claws however!

I didn't vote on this challenge b/c I was away, but if I had, yours would have won it for me too. Great colors and contrast! Definitely deserved to win I feel.
Congratulations Yvette, wonderful picture. I am also planning to take my little son to the world of birds. From a fellow Cape Townian (although living most of the year in Mauritius)
Greetings to South Africa and welcome to DPChallenge.. this is quite a way to make a splash here with your first entry :) Great shot and congrats on first place :)
this is my pick for the winner. excellent composition, great lighting, superb contrast and colors. it also happens to meet the challenge very nicely. I am simply blown away by this image.
Wow--really nice shot. I like the detail in the eyelids and the feathers. Overall, I would give this a 7--the only thing I can see that could be improved is the focus around the beak, however, I know that may be a limitation of the camera since this is such a close-up macro shot. *7* -balynch
Wow! I absolutely love this photo! The contrast of the dark and light feathers is really striking, and you were able to capture such softness in the feathers around his eyes.... They look almost like snowflakes. I can't wait till the voting is over so I can add this to my favorites!

For those that are just learning, like me.
Composition: Scoring in this area is based on basic composition of a picture and includes the rule of thirds, balance, cropping, and curved and diagonal lines. Subject matter that does not lend itself to the picture or otherwise unwanted is also considered here.
Originality: Scoring in this area is based on pictures or concepts that I have seen, as well as how much effort you have invested in the picture. Usually a little something that sets it aside from a snapshot. Does it make me want to come back for another look? You know things like that.
Technical Aspects: Focus, exposure, lighting, and other special effects (done by the camera), and post processing are all considered in this category.
Meets Challenge: This is based on my interpretation of if you, have/have not, met the challenge. This is fairly simple but quite important for this site.
There are many sites that can give you assistance in achieving better skills in photography, but I think the best way to learn is to take pictures and show them to other people. Believe me when it is a good one you will know it.
awesome shot. best yet. maybe move the frame a little to the right .. that's a nit pick. also your focus is on the feathers between eye and beak. i would have liked to see it on eye more.
beautiful photo.. I think the composition on this one is about as perfect as it could be... I LOVE the contrast of the eye against the black/gray feathers of this owl. The catch light in the eye is also a very nice touch. I think this is my favorite photo this week and I hope to see a blue ribbon on it Monday :) great shot.. = 10 - jmsetzler
This is good, really good. This (contest) being so subjective, I dare to think I would like it better cropped closer to just the eye. I'm sure you will get contradicting comments so.....take it all with a grain of salt. I really DO like this.
He looks very daunting and focused (I SURE woudn't stick my finger in his cage!). The picture is VERY good. In fact, I cant really find anything to complain about. 10
This seems to have a "soft" focus, but I LOVE the composition and his colors! While feathers don't come to mind first when I hear "texture" this is a really great shot.
Totally wonderful! (Is this a stuffed bird?) I got no complaints, issues or suggestions for improvement. I only gave four tens this week, this is one of them! 10 Swash
i got a feeling this fella is going to watch me from the dpc page all next week ... wonderful photo, and perfect fit for the challenge. no criticisms from me. -- gr8photos (10)
This is lovely. Would have cropped out the little dark area for the other eye. My eye wanders to it even though it's not supposed to go there Very, very nice.
