I would like to re-create this using a chinese umbrella. I just find the unexpectedness of the umbrella in this setting what makes it truely unique.

Great shot, congratulations.
On a more boring technical note, since you were shooting at a very wide focal length, could you have used a larger aperture and less ISO to get less grain and similar DOF while shooting at the same speed? (tripod would be best if possible) If you like the grain, forget my question, it's not a very important point but got me wandering. Light looks amazing in this shot!

Now this is great. The room itself is awesome looking with all the contrasting grain, and the umbrella just throws some great contrast in there. Nice focus, nice lighting, amazing you got thiw without the window being blown (mine from this week was a bit blown so I know how hard it can be). 9

Creative and well done. The natural wood tone works well with the colorful umbrella. Minor distraction of the umbrella shadow on the far wall/floor (fill light flash?). This looks like a historical/tourist type building. I'll have to come back later to find out where. ;^)

The contrast is so surreal, the umbrella appears to levitate
like a papier-mache circus wheel in the sixteenth chapel.
There is, in my view, no better entry in this challenge.Message edited by author 2006-06-12 11:04:25.

very nice. probably could trim just a bit off the bottom and left, or lower your perspective, to really take advantage of the umbrella's colors. or, tape a flashlight with a diffuser on it to the handle.

Second pass (not too many entries this time):
- nice choice of colors on this one; the contrast between the room tones and the colorful umbrella is the winning combination here.
- The window adds to composition, properly located for maximal viewing pleasure.
- lighting is good, the light that comes from the window is stronger than the key light from your right, which is a good thing. I wish I could not see the shaddow on the wall from the second light though.
Congratulations on a well-executed, interesting image.
