Composition I love the composition, with the woody on the edge and his shadow leading across behind him
Technical stuff (exposure, dof, lighting etc…) The lightings beautiful, but slightly overexposed on his left arm/right leg. Focus good.
Post-processing Would like to know your processing steps, it seems a touch overprocessed in places.
Meeting the challenge Really nice use of a single light source.
My personal opinion Great clean shot, shame about the little bit of blownoutness, very good score for a Woody pic
Composition/subject Love the composition! It's quite perfect in my opinion. He's facing the crowd and the shadow is just right. As for the subject, I'm actually kind of fond of woody shots - they're a great learning tool for things like use of lighting, and rather amusing in their own right.
Technical At first I might have said the lighting is too harsh, that it could be toned down a bit, but really it's pretty good for the shot you chose - stage lighting (as it is set to be here) is generally very harsh like this. The background appears to be a fabric - I like the texture it forms but it could be just a bit smoother, maybe.
Meets challenge Meets challenge just fine.
My opinion Congrats on a personal best! It's a good idea well executed, and in my opinion deserved a much better score.
First off, always try to include some info about the shot in the Photographer's Comments section. It really helps out when we know what the photographer was thinking and what equipment/lighting/etc. were used, especially when you request a critique. Secondly, congrats on your highest scoring photograph to date, as well as a top 100 finish.
Camera Work/Technical: You did a terrific job keeping all elements in crisp focus to render very nice detail.
Lighting: Excellent lighting. This is the strongest element in the photograph. Wonderful job capturing the detail around the shadow.
Composition/Content: Again, very nice. You created a composition that allows the eye to flow around the key elements very nicely.
My Opinion: Nice job meeting the challenge, but your subject has become commonplace around DPC. I think that the voters echoed the same feeling with their votes. This is a far better image than the 5.67 that it scored, but voters tend to vote lower when they see similar subjects over and again.
Congratulations on a new personal best! That's always a neat accomplishment.
I like the woody - and a lot of other folks do to. The lighting on him is a touch harsh - gentling that would go a long ways and be worth at least one point from me.
Your composition is excellent. Inclusion of the shadow is also very appropriate. I think I would like to see the texture that is in the shadow area extend outward just a little more, but that might kill the shot too.
As always, just my thoughts. Keep up the good work.
Tradin gPost -
Now here is a much better shot. Good idea and much better execution. A little bit grainy - lowering ISO could have helped - but a minimal issue. The colors are nice and warm and the the shadow behind works very well. Maybe a slightly different angle on woody would have given more interest in the shadow behind. I like the negative space up top. Congrats on a new personal best. I didnt vote in this challenge but I would have probably given this at least a 6 if not a 7.
Trading post...
I know a lot of people like the woody shots, but personally I find them quite bland. Your lighting seems good, maybe just a tad too bright. I like the shadow, but it maybe should have been sharper. I know I'm not being much help here, but I'm really not sure how to fix a woody (LOL). ;)
I thought the photo was a bit harshly lighted with the right thigh blown out (at least on my monitor). The DOF also seems to shallow because the shadow is fuzzy, which might not happen with more depth to the picture.
The composition was good. I would have liked to see a stronger, cleaner shadow, because in a sense this photo is as much about the shadow as the Woody IMHO.
I gave this a 5. The idea was fine, the lighting and DOF didn't work for me though.
Do you notice the "ghosting" between the shadows/highlights on the actual wooden figure? i am not for sure as to what caused this, perhaps over contrast, i would have loved to see more emphasis on the actual shadow and less on the figure. my eyes are drawn more to the shadow, and i find it more visually intreguing. 7
