This reminds me of a photo my father took of the Rev. Awdrey (Thomas the Tank Engine author). We went to the Harrogate Model Railway Fair in 1970, and there was the Rev. with his own little model railway - and a pipe in his mouth. I have an autographed book ;>)
Ah, proper marvellous this is. Your dealing with light is a little unsure, i'd say - the left side of the face seems just too far exposed, but it's a minor point. The model-work is so good that it's a genuine shock of scale you present, and the hand adds an engagement with that world that is essential to the image. I wish that the 'sky' were slighly less bland - darker, lighter, whatever, but it's a muddy nothing tone at the moment, and i find the sepia-toning a little much, would have preferred a straight black-and-white - that would have made more of a connection with the documentary photographs of the age his model depicts I think. But those are minor points, really. This is by far the most interesting shot in this challenge, by streets one might say, and ought to win.
a bit too indifferent lighting for such an upclose and personal portrait. maybe if the SM was more absorbed in his "job" this would be more of a "character portrait"
the expression is quite good BTW
Great portrait!! Fits the challenge perfectly! I really like that he's in the middle of placing something, giving some action and interest to the photo. He's making great eye contact, which really gives the photo some impact to the viewer. Sepia tones work fine for me here, though I'd be curious to see it in black and white as well! Great job!!
Haha, love the setting and the pipe and hat are just the cream of the cake, a very fitting match. Lighting could be a bit better and I am not really fond of the duotone treatment but other than that, top notch and I feel this says a lot about the character. 8 from me!
This is really good. Exactly what I would expect an environmental portrait to be. I like the eye contact and the surroundings tell us a lot about the person. The only thing I personally don't care much for is the pinkish tint. Would prefer it in black and white. That would be an easy thing to change though.
Nice shot. One of my top three choices for the win. Love the tones, and the expression. Fits challenge nicely. Has all the elements to place high. Good luck!
