Not actually taken with the 17-40 as listed but with a very old full manual fisheye lens that I borrowed from a fellow photographer at the event. All I know about the lens is that it was russian, so I couldn't pick it out of a list to specify on here :)
Came home after the snowboarding competition, saw the challenge, figured people would make the connection, then again I have been wrong about that assumption before...guess we will see.
*EDIT* Well it looks likes like my assumption was right this time :) Thanks to everyone who voted, nice to take the blue.
HAHAHA, you would think after seeing this happen a million times I would have known to make sure the exif data in my camera was correct, but I guess those are the breaks, ah well, shit happens :) <--- scratch that, looked at the calendar, apparently I did take it the day before the challenge was announced, and apparently didn't pay attention, whoops? :)
Disqualification Details
Your photograph must be taken after the challenge is announced. Your camera's date and time must be set to correspond with your local timezone. Please review the challenge submission rules.

Was the 'honest mistake' entering the wrong date for when the photo was taken, or was it later trying to imply (in your comments) that the exif data was wrong?
It's a good thing this wasn't taken on the day you originally claimed (April 3). It probably wouldn't have turned out as well because it was cloudy/overcast in Calgary that day.
Anyway, it's a great photo regardless of the DQ
1) I didn't see how it could have been on the wrong date because I was sure when editing I took it on the day the challenge started so I thought EXIF.
2) A few minutes later I happened across my calendar, realized my mistake was my own fault, not the cameras, reported it here afterwards

...if we don't follow those simple rules about "the time frame" of the photo, then we could all just go into our portfolio and grab the best image to meet the current challenge.
I'd rather have everyone race to get the best shot during the week!

Bummer dood. Don't feel to badly, you did get the blue. The DQ is just a technicality. It is purely academic.

that russian lens was probably the zenitar which has good and bad copies out, but mostly its not too hot, but who cares about pixel peeping when u got the shot.
Only thing that would make this better is a powerful fill flash and an underexposed sky, but its still pretty solid, congrats man.
The lens could be the Peleng as well.
Great photo, congrats on the ribbon!
Peleng is so much wider. Unless he did some serious cropping, Id say its safe to assume its a peleng
No cropping was done to the photo, zenitar sounds about right. I'll find out for sure and post it.

Congrats on your first ribbon, well taken shot and deserved to win. Only thing I can think of to make it better would be if you darkened the sky a little bit, not too much and made it a deep blue instead of light blue like it is now but other than that, awesome. Love the composition. I´ll get you next time :)

8 - Very good. Lens works well here. Nudge rotation up on the left to get it more balanced make this even better in my opinion. Depending what was there/you had to work with, perhaps even a little more width either side, who knows. Good control of the lighting/sunlight/etc to retain detail in the 'boarder'.
