When I discovered dpchallenge, this was the very first image that I saw on the front page and caught my attention. At that time (only a few short months ago), I was captivated because it is a stunning image but also because I had absolutely no idea how to begin to create an image so stunning. Even now, I can still only aspire, but I'm proud to say that at least I can approach this image with a plan of how to shoot it and post-process it.
Post: rotate, crop, levels, curves, dodge&burn, neatimage, USM, resize, save for web.

Post Challenge: Thanks to all who voted. I am totally thrilled to have my second ribbon. It has been a super week reading all the comments. The last two days I have been away from the computer and it has been torture so it was fantastic to turn it on again and see that I have a ribbon!
Was browsing photos and come across this one again. Love it as much as I did the first time I seen it. My daughter loves her dress. :-)) Hope all is well!
OUch! First Joey Lawrence's "shadow" ribbon winner, now a classic, ribbon winning, retake of a site favorite. Here goes :)
First impression: Beautiful picture, the child is beautiful, the colors and texture of her dress contrasting nicely with the rugged wall. Lovely picture.
Technically I find your photo superb, with great skin tones, vibrant colors, sharpness, etc. etc. All of the qualities which are the foundation of a great pic. The only nitpic I have is the shadow area surrounding her left eye. it would be nice to have just a little more clarity around her eye. Her hands are also natural, not classically posed, which is one more reason to love this pic.
The feeling of your picture is also superb. The girl has such a pensive/thoughtful expression that it forces the viewer to wonder either what she is thinking or if something is wrong, giving the viewer a connection to the child.
As it relates to the challenge...you took a very good ribbon winner and represented your own version very well. Perfect choice of photo and perfect treatment.
Any questions?? Just PM me. good luck in the future.
This is a beautiful image. You should be very proud of your work. Beautiful! Congrats!
Thanks for the compliments, Sonifo. Your photo was a great inspiration and quite a challenge for me, but I loved it so much that I was determined to keep going despite some set backs and some aspects that I had no idea how to tackle. I learnt a great deal from studying your shot in detail (plus an argument or two with GIS_boy....), but the red makes it all worthwhile.
Nicole, you are an exceptional photographer and you really pulled this off. All credit to the photograph you emulated, but this is one level better. Stunning clarity, light and colour and well deserved ribbon.
Sonifo is one of my favorite photographers at DPC and there are many, many images that you could have used as a tribute to her fabulous photography. I'm fascinated you picked this one.
No disrespect intended, but I think your tribute is better than her original. This picture just blows me away. Not that my opinion means much, but it is one of my top three picks for a ribbon. It is perfect in every way.
I did a side by side with the original and while nearly identical, the lighting and expression make them very different. One of the best of the challenge.
I really liked Sonifos composition much better, this is not bad at all but the composition is a little too cramped for my taste. Good job on the lighting though.
Pretty close. NOt quite as vivid as the original BUT this stands on its own. I thought of doing it myself. Maybe a bit more negative space in front of her feet, but a damn good shot. 8
