I took a little different approach to it, but hey....the premise is the same. Anyways, there's not really much to this shot...I opened the shutter while spinning some cloth that was on fire on the end of rope. I have a couple of outtakes that I had a hard time choosing from. I'll post those later.
Anyways....I hope you enjoy this photo, because it was by far one of the most fun to create. I had an absolute blast making it.
About the post processing:
I used shadow/highlight to brighten up the sky a little bit. I increased the red saturation and applied one run through neatimage and then sharpened, cloned out some lights in the background, and that was all.
Oh...and I have to give props to my roomates Cory and Jeff.....without their help this image would of never been made. Thanks a bunch guys!
Caleb

This is rad Caleb, The fz20 is not bad at night shots, even with the limited shutter length. The FZ20 is limited to 8 seconds max from what I can remember, but i believe it would of been 2 seconds, he would have caused more blur longer and also the streaks from the embers would have dropped more looking ugly like badly timed fireworks pictures. I love the tendrils the sparks make. I would have given it 7+ had i been a member then.
Wow! this is such a great picture Caleb. I love the embers flying off the rag, and the back ground is stunning. Keep up the great work, the first of many ribbons for ya!
Edit: After seeing other shots the are in the top 20 of many of the challenges that DNMC I feel that as long as the Advanced or Basic rules are not broken, there is no need for DQ or Self DQ.
We are all photographers and KNOW what "exactly 2 seconds" was refering to. I DID NOT enter a photo because I was not able to get a decent 2 second shot. So I'm honest, and adhere to the challenge and BINGO a shot wins that was NOT a 2 second exposure.
I hope my image of the garbage man picking up trash last Saturday scores well in the "PLAYTIME" challenge !
Lets just have all challenges be FREE STUDY from now on.

Congratulations on the ribbon, well deserved. In my humble opinion, as someone that did not enter or vote, is that I think the description is just that, a description of what to do. Would a 1/500 shot of a naked man standing in a window ("exposing himself") for two seconds (hence a two second exposure) be right or wrong? I think it would be a lateral interpretation of the challenge and perfectly alright, as is this shot. As an aside though, I think it would be nice if you did include the full details of the shot to help people like me that would like to try something similar. I'd love to know how long it actually was and to be honest, wouldn't be surprised if it was close to 2 seconds (but it would be nice to know). Well done on the ribbon.

EDIT AFTER A FEW COMMENTS
I didn't enter or vote and as a result I made the above comment without realising what the details of the challenge said.. "Take a photograph using a shutter speed of exactly 2 seconds."... I stand corrected. The DPC needs to change and make the details something that needs to be adhered to. My apologies.
Congrats on your ribbon, I knew this one would place well. About the background I already wrote in my previous comment and I see it has been reinforced by many others here. Somehow it just seems as a waste of such beautiful scenery and alone it would have been a top shot by itself.
There's a festival in Kumamoto, Japan, where you can do the same thing with bundles of straw - but the rope is shorter than what yours appears to be. (And it gets really warm...)
Nice shot but clearly doesn't look like a 2 second shot. And funny that you didn't post your shutter speed. If it isn't a 2 second exposure, should not have ribboned and is a real slap in the face to those that made the honest effort to get a 2 second exposure.
GREAT SHOT...however, I do agree with the rest. If this is not a 2 second exposure then it should not have been entered. I scored entries by KNOWING how hard a 2 sec shot is to master. I don't think it is fair to the others that used a 2 second exposure.

Great job... if people did not think it met the challenge they should have voted it lower. If you don't want to post it took you 7 minutes to get the shot you don't have to. Or you can if you want... they can't take your ribbon away from you. Once again great job and I like how you gave credit to this being a tribute!

Nice shot. Glad you had fun. But you have not disclosed your shutter speed. Not here, or in forum when directly asked. I will have to assume your ribbon was ill received, as was the blue ribbon winners.
I think that is quite a shame to those of us who worked very hard as well, and had fun, with our "exactly" 2 second exposures. You know, I wanted to get a squirrel at a 2 second exposure. I sat perched in wait for HOURS waiting for the flicking tail of a squirrel to be ghosted out. Why? Because everyone knows how fast squirrels move, and for 2 seconds to sit still for me, would have been a good shot. I did get one, but thought I would give tribute to dead veterans instead by taking a shot of the fountain near the memorial, which again took about 50 takes for anything decent with my experience. My bad choice not to enter the squirrel when fountains abounded in this challenge, but I worked hard for my 2 seconds. And look at ShutterPug, who sat and napped for FOUR HOURS in her car and in the snow for her lovely shot?
I expect more from the seasoned DPC'ers than this. This is really a shame. I didn't expect to win, but at least I respected the spirit of the challenge. Something I learned to do since my dof shot in the "singled out" where I got SO MUCH flack for creating my dof, and I wasn't even close to a good score. I was so wrapped up in the "illusion" of photography discussions in forum that I threw caution to the wind and entered a wildlife photo that only eluded to be wildlife, and a singled out photo that had created dof. I have since learned my lesson from the flack. I won't be doing that again, and will either be able to pull off my shot or not pull it off and not enter, but I am new and wasn't the wiser. Now I am. But for you seasoned DPC'ers who in forum can't WAIT to post your scores and boast, or have many ribbons and high scores, you should be ashamed to receive ribbons when they are ill recieved. Very disrespectful. Not only to the challenge, but to your fellow DPC'ers and to DPC in general.
I would be happy to retract this statement if you can provide proof of 2 seconds used, but until then, I think this is just a horrible excuse for placement in 3rd. Don't get me wrong. The concept was excellent, and the composition great, but NOT for this challenge.
At least Elsapo, for his blue ribbon win, proclaimed to be sorry and showed his shutter speed even when he didn't have to. Still no excuse for winning a ribbon, but at least he owned up to his faults to some extent. You have not even done that much.
Congrats dude. I do find it hard to believe this falls in the 2 second exposure realm - and your silence both in the details and forum seem to confirm this. Hope your conscience can handle looking at the ribbon when you know that those who stayed with 2 seconds deserved it more. There seems to be a lack of integrity here at DPC these days.
Congrats dude! Now you have a ribbon and your profile is looking better and better ;) I knew it was only a matter of time before you strated ribboning! Great job! BTW, get a new beenie!
I was just wondering why you hadn't won a ribbon yet. You couldn't have chosen a better location for this shot. Here's another favorite for your quick growing collection. Congrats on the first ribbon of many.
The beautiful background trees/water/moon could hold there own in this challenge. The fire ring alone could hold its own in this challenge. What you've done here is way beyond a casual effort and you will be rewarded.
8 - Good and unusual. Nice complementary & interesting background. Colors are nice and look natural, not selectively desaturated. The only thing in my opinion is the clothing - doesn't really suit, but minor. Good use of the 2 sec exposure.
My only critique of this is that, if the person were static, it would draw the eye toward him/her, at the center of all that motion. Still, great juxtaposition and color between the main subject and the background.
hey stare_at_the_sun! lol pretty easy to find yours. I like the contrast between the warmth of the fire and the cool water/sky. Only thing that would have made it better is if you where in focus. either way good luck
Absolutely love the background, the silky feeling I get from the water, the hint of clouds around the moon, the trees standing in the water, and the shoreline. Beautiful. Now I also love the swirl of fire, the flares or strings of fire coming off the center swirl are amazing and beautifully done, not real sure of the person within the circle, I "feel" they are out of place and would have like this even more without them. Of course the person is probably controlling the swirl of fire so I don't know how you could have done it without them. Over all this picture seems to give me two beautiful contrasting photos in one, good luck with this one
Hehehehehe I found you Caleb. You know you have got to get another beanie. You wore that same one in your Road entry ;) Great shot my friend. My spot for the Blue ;)
Super shot, one of the better ones, even one of the best in this challenge. Done well too, love the composition. One thing gets to me though, there is an amazing background here with the moon rippling so awesomely across the water. One is being pulled back and forth between that amazing background and your main subject in the foreground.
I like Nazguls version much better but this is pretty cool, the surroundings are cool. Just too much foreground for my taste. Anyway, one of the better shots in the challenge, got a 7 from me.
This is a cool shot but I am looking at that amazing scene behind the fire ring. I would love to see this picture without the special effects and just the moonlight with the silhouette of the trees, the reflections in the water and maybe people sitting around the campfire.
