This is a waterfall in Ecuador after a big rain. It was hard to take this because I had to climb slippery rocks and set up the tripod. There was also lots of mist (so I had to constantly wipe my lens)
Editing may be a little off because it was done on an "old" laptop :)
Thanks everyone for the blue and comments, and I apologize that its not 2secs.

FACT 1) Justin read the thread where a member of the site council states that a photo should "LOOK LIKE TWO SECONDS" as opposed to being two seconds. This is no fault of Justin. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT POINT THAT IS CONVENIENTLY OVERLOOKED AGAIN AND AGAIN.
Fact - details of challenges are noted in the challenge itself.
Fact - challenge details quote, "Take a photograph using a shutter speed of exactly 2 seconds."
Fact - it's a nice photograph
Fact - it doesn't comply with the challenge
You left out Fact 3: "...Afterall, why should he have a photo DQed if it wasn't a DQable offense?" Check the rules--you can't be DQ'ed for not meeting the challenge!
"Entries will not be disqualified for misinterpreting or failing to meet the challenge to which they are entered. Please do not request disqualification for these reasons, as such requests will not be considered." -from Advanced Editing ruleset.
Great capture, Justin. (But watch out for possible changes to challenge rules in the future which could allow for DQ for not meeting the challenge...had a fun one already with Rubber Ducky.)
Justin, the bottom line is you presented a wonderful photo that has the look and feel of the challenge description. Well done and congrats on the blue!

You are kicking everyone's butt every week! It's like Tiger Woods used to be ... The people that had a problem with him were the ones that were losing to him !!! (ok maybe it's still like that:) ... These people are jealous and we all know you didn't break the rules because we read the rules. I made the assumption you used some sort of camera filter to allow the shutter to stay open in daylight for 2 seconds. With your talent, I'm sure you'll have the money to have all the funky equipment you want soon enough.
There have been plenty of challenges where the photographer "fooled" the viewer without breaking rules - this being the most recent.
Having said all that, the waterfall is beautiful but not the most original place to take an image.
And frankly, I'm kinda getting tired of you winning all these ribbons - give others a chance :) (assuming you have a sense of humor.
You are still my dp enemy and I must beat you - in a sportmanlike manner, of course!!!
PS: If you weren't famous before, you are now! ... All fame involves controversy !
One more thing: I usually score high when I risk my life taking images ... and sometimes it's my wife that wants to kill me :) ! KEEP it UP! ...PSS: be glad you have a supportive father~!
A question for the critics: How COULd this image have been taken in 2-seconds! ... help the BOY so he can kick your butt next week.
Thank you very much to the individuals that have stood up for Justin against the name calling and personal attacks. You will never know how much we appreciate that.

FACT 2) Justin went to great lengths to get this photo. He leaped onto a slippery boulder in the middle of the raging water. He is enamored to his photo and not the ribbon. It is a great photo and he deserves to be proud of it. His bad luck is that it did ribbon. As it stands he would have been happier with a lower score and placement but he is not going to DQ his photo based on irrational sour grapes that don't take into account the so important thread mentioned in FACT 1.
FACT 3) Justin has received many many PMs from very credible and respected photographers telling him not to self DQ. Afterall, why should he have a photo DQed if it wasn't a DQable offense?
FACT 4) Justin did attempt many two seconds shots from his slippery and dangerous perch and NEVER had a premeditated intention of taking anything other than a two second shot. REPEAT: There was no premeditated intention of bending the rules or looking for loop holes.
FACT 5) Character flaw, cheater, etc. etc. etc? He has more character than the "grown ups" that are viciously attacking him will ever hope to have in thier lives. At 17 he stands before a howling raging mob, reads every post they spew, clicks it as helpful and stands by his guns. Character flaw....laughable and disgusting at the same time.
FACT 6) Yes, I am his father. Sitting in another country, far away, unable to comfort him, sad at the treatment my son with an incredible track record at DPC is receiving and proud to tears at the way he is handling himself and not giving in to unjust wrath. Believe me, the EASY ROAD would have been for him to self DQ but he does not take the EASY ROAD ever.
FACT 7) This post is not for the comments that disagree with Justin posting the photo or feel disappointment. These statements and feelings are understandable and respected. That is much, much different the the labels and deeper insults that have been thrown his way. I say SHAME ON YOU to those people.
This is a great photo. At such a young age, you are an incredible photographer. This particular entry shows a character flaw that you have. The bottomline is that you cheated by choosing to ignore the challenge rules. Your apology is a good thing, but it's only a first step. The next step would be not to accept the ribbon. Perhaps with time, maturity, and experiance, your character will be as honorable as your photography talent. Good luck.
C'mon gimme a break, there is NO character flaw here! He followed the Rules and the rules CLEARLY state that you CANNOT be DQ'd for NOT meeting the challenge! Get this in your heads before harping about this over and over. Go read the Challenge rules.
If you shoot and enter challenges to score well and win ribbons then you succeeded. if you shoot and enter to share wonderful photography then you succeeded. If you shoot and enter to challenge yourself given the parameters of the topic, then I think you failed. DPC ultimately is a learning tool as we all agree. And the question I guess would be, what did you learn here?

I'm glad this shot won. I think people forget that, regardless of the challenge description, it's the result that matters. And this is an awesome photo -- definitely looks like a 2 second exposure to me. :-)
...Would a 1/500 shot of a naked man standing in a window ("exposing himself") for two seconds (hence a two second exposure) be right or wrong?...
Good example but dose not out smart the details of the challenge.
Details: Take a photograph using a shutter speed of exactly 2 seconds.
It's probably not fair to DQ the picture but it's even more unfair to those who did send in a 2 sek exposure pictures. Then it's unfair to the voter that thought he was voting on a 2sek exposure picture and would have voted diffrently if he would have known.
(I did not vote nor submit a picture to this challenge)
Congratulations on the ribbon, well deserved. In my humble opinion, as someone that did not enter or vote, is that I think the description is just that, a description of what to do. Would a 1/500 shot of a naked man standing in a window ("exposing himself") for two seconds (hence a two second exposure) be right or wrong? I think it would be a lateral interpretation of the challenge and perfectly alright, as is this shot. I actually thought it was longer rather than shorter. Good one, congrats. PS.. I'm still jealous and want your ribbon... :)
EDIT AFTER A FEW COMMENTS
I didn't enter or vote and as a result I made the above comment without realising what the details of the challenge said.. "Take a photograph using a shutter speed of exactly 2 seconds."... I stand corrected. The DPC needs to change and make the details something that needs to be adhered to. My apologies.
I hope you're not letting all the bitter people who wanted a better score get you down... at the end of the day you didn't win this ribbon because you cheated, you won it because you have a good eye and are a good photographer. Enjoy it.
hi dude,
well i gave it a pure/crystal clear 10 :-)
but ... i'm not gonna say what some other did, nevertheless i think the same way :-)
but 1 thing for sure ... this is astoishing photo. fantastic.
Beautiful shot, but why submit it to this challenge if it doesn't meet the criteria? If the result was all that mattered, then what's the point of meeting a challenge by breaking the primary rule of it?
this is very beautiful and deserving of a ribbon but not in this challenge since the rules were broken. . . I think it should be disqualified and any other that isn't 2 second only. . . that was the criteria
Congrats on yet another *yawn* ribbon. It's a beautiful scene. Heh- you really poked a hornet's nest with this one, but I can't fault someone for doing what they're legally allowed to do. This may well lead to some modification of future challenges, so you should be proud to be a facilitator of change... something that doesn't happen very often! ;-)
Love the image and I ranked it very high. I still think it is one the best images I've seen on this site. Unfortunately, I wish I could retract the vote knowing you didn’t follow the rules or sprit of the competition. It’s not fair to the rest of the photographers who followed the rules and didn’t deceive the voters.
What a waste of the blue ribbon when the image does not fit the challenge. I admit the image is nice. But not meeting the explicit challenge description while it does not get you DQed, makes a mockery of everyone else who has tried to meet the spirit of the challenge. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Really a shame this won the ribbon...nice shot yes, but not a 2 second shot and no attempt was made to do it in 2 sec. A real slap in the face to all of those who made the honest effort to get the shot they wanted in 2 sec.
it seems that the darkness of the photos indicates a two-second exposure could have been achieved in the right lighting. later or earlier in the day would have allowed for this. too bad you didn't think that was important or you wouldn't have submitted this 1/2 second shot taken with too much available light.
Had I known it didn't meet the challenge, I would have voted much lower. It's a shame that this won. So many other beautiful images that complied with the challenge.
I think that you ought to be ashamed for having entered into this challenge with a 1/2 second exposure. You are not new here, and must have known exactly what you were doing.
As far as this photograph goes, well, it's a nice one, but did not strike me as particularly interesting: I gave it a 6. The composition is boring. The watefall is beautiful, but where is the photographer's work?
Yes, this is definitely deserving of a ribbon, but maybe in another challenge instead of the 2-second shutter speed challenge. It is outstanding tho!!!
My sentiments are definately with hotpasta's comments. I really don't think this should have won and there should have been a special rule on this challenge to DQ any photo not within the 2 seconds. The whole idea was not to take any long exposure shot, but one within the rules which as you must be aware of, is not that easy with 2 seconds.
It's lovely and a wonderful photo, but it should have never been entered in a 2 second challenge when so many, including myself, went out of our way to stay within the spirit of the challenge. Your ribbon was ill received. I appreciate your apology, but its a little too little and a little too late. :)
Justin, there's no doubt that this is a great shot from a great perspective. Congratulations.
I need to say a few things about this shot:
I'm really disappointed that you entered the 2 second challenge with a 1/2 second shot. It puts all of the hard work that several hundred photographers below you down the tubes. I didn't enter the challenge, so it's no sour grapes on my part. You got the ribbon, but you got it like an athlete who takes forbidden substances to get the edge over others. I know that's harsh, but it's the way I see it.
I don't expect you to give your ribbon back, but for a promising photographer with a superb portfolio, it's something you need to learn from for the future. Fairness should be the first value of any challenge.
How strange. Dull, over-used theme with no highlights... Greens are obviously dodged by heavy masking and them being unsharp doesn't add. A stable 5, no more. If only I had voting rights :)
Congratulations, a very good photograph.
However, I just feel for the guys who entered technically correct 2 sec exposure photographs and were placed lower as a result of photographs that DNMC at all.
Congratulations on the win.
Have to agree though that because it wasnt a 2 second shot it really should not have been entered. The extra 1 and a half seconds of light etc. etc. on this shot would have made it a lot more difficult to achieve the effect you have.
Congrats on yet another ribbon dude, you are definately one of the most promising photographers here. Must say that this result surprised me, don´t get me wrong, this is hardly a bad shot but just too dark for my taste and very ordinary, postcard like so I gave it a 6, a rating that means "above average and a pretty good shot" for me :)
magical. I think this is the best of the waterfall photos -- and I say that even though one of the other ones is mine. :) A WEE bit less of an overprocessed look to the green, and this would be a 10 from me.
8 - Very nice. Really like the lush green growth captured and how it contrasts well with the 'white' water, which the 2 sec exposure has worked well here, as well as the black rocks. The only two things I could try to suggest, and both are very minor, are a little more 'interest', or detail at the bottom/fore (but difficult with the long exposure plus there are not too many rocks/stationary objects there) and the overall balance - just seems that this needs a whisker nudge rotation up on the right (but I realize this may well be dead level/straight so apologies in advance) - just a visual thing, and yes, just my opinion. Perhaps a more refined crop also, especially on the sides, not sure.
OH YEAH!!!! Now THIS is a 2-second waterfall that makes you go "10!!!!" No blur in the wrong places. ..No dead growth hanging around. . . No blown out highlights. This is about the most beautiful, perfect waterfall photo I've ever seen, and I have several that I purchased from a landscape photographer friend hanging in my house!!!! To me, this should win blue, hands down!! 10
