M42 (Orion Nebula)and a hint of M43, photographed on a tracking mount with 30 second exposure, 100mm lens at f/5.6. I don't know what the streak is in the lower right quadrant, possibly an orbiting satellite.
Adjusted levels, curves, and unsharp mask. Cropped from much larger image and resized for web. In camera noise reduction turned on, but red channel noise is still evident. Extensive use of curves revealed more detail than I expected from this short exposure.

Wow....this has everything to do with country life....I live in the city and can't even begin to see a star. When I go out to the "country" it looks like a million tiny flashlights.

Oh way to good!!! This would of been my favorite!!! Sorry I didnt vote though had I a must 10!! Good try with this as its so dang hard to get anything at all for a picture with the stars!..
And it defanetly fits challenge for we know its darker in the country...
Darn low voters with no thinking or credit..I just want to reach through my pc and shake some sometimes...
Anyways I like this.
I agree with ElGordo and kahtava. This is an image that deserved a much better reception than it seems to have gotten. It is a beautiful shot and a great take on this challenge.
People who live in the country appriciate the beauty of the night skies more then city-folk who don't get to see the stars on a clear night. Great Picture!
There is a DQ request on this image, suspicions confirmed that the average DPC voter is abysmally ignorant of astronomy and what it means to have clear, country skies. I live in the country because of these clear skies. It is rare to encounter anyone that lives in the country that does not appreciate the beautiful, unpolluted views of the heavens.
