Chimaera (or chimera) has many different meanings. In microbiology, a chimaera is a cell which has engulfed another cell but left its nucleus intact and able to express the genes of its DNA. It is believed that the mitochondria of animal cells and the chloroplasts of plant cells were once types of bacteria that were taken into the eukaryotic cell. The endosymbiotic relationship that evolved was to the great benefit of both cells and there they have remained ever since.
