...The E-500 does not take 3 different photos (unless you're using braketing) that would only under expose and over expose -/+3 the shots....
Oh. I knew I read 'something' about 3 versions .. never mind. You'll just have to go back and wait for him/her again. Lesson learned I guess - better to shoot in color and convert to b&w in pp - can't do the reverse. Thank you for the information/reply.
..... I had been out earlier in the day taking b&w's of the kids playing in the snow and truly did not have the time to do much more than a quick metering, then made sure I got atleast 1 photo of him before he flew off. So, it's originally taken in b&w - no fixing that ;P.....
Not sure on the E500, and may well be too late now (wiped memory card) - but, doesn't the camera take 3 versions of the same shot? - just wondering if one might be a color.. not sure.
Ahhh! Thanks to everyone for the comments and votes. I must tell you, embarrassingly enough... this photo was taken through the dirty windshield of my car. I first flew by him going aprox 90 km/hr. At first I thought it was a hawk because we have plenty of them around. When I passed by him I realized his face was flat and those stripes! AMAZING! So I had to litterally slam on the brakes and throw it into reverse to go back to him. As you can see, he was just as curious as I was!

The catchlights in his eyes are from my headlights (LOL) it was dusk at this point. After shooting this photo I attempted to exit the car - but he flew away.
As for cropping... it works too. When I sent him out to my friends the next morning I did have the right side cropped. Being the rebel I am... I decided to throw out the rule of thirds for this one! He is, "the centre of attention"......
I'm completely hooked now... I MUST GET OUT AND FIND ANOTHER!
I disagree with the comment about this being too-centered. Where the owl is emphasizes the feeling of surprise implied by the title and the owl's expression. I don't think it would've worked if it had been anywhere else.
Oh! I really like this...the owl's stare really draws you in...I also like the fact that the owl is centered in the image...for me it works...this is just a really nice image.
9 - Very nice. Toning works well. Good composition. Criticism; mainly just wish the owl 'popped' more, but difficult, especially with the toning/contrast. Perhaps a more finely tuned crop on the right, not sure, works well as is. Up to 9 from 8.
Very cool capture, getting this owl out in the open like this! Wonderful camouflage it has. Nice focus and clarity. Didn't oversharpen. Looks like a glint of light in the eyes...did you use fill-in flash? Just curious. Only nitpick is the centering of the subject but it's not costing you anything in scoring points from me. One of my top 3 picks.
STunning.. the black and white is great.. I might have tried a bit more play with the contrast.. just to make it pop a tad more..but stunning all the same :)
I really like this, but I probably would have rated it higher with a tighter crop of the picture, and more of an offset to one side of the main character. 8
Lovely - and I particularly like the b & w treatment. The central comp is a bit of shame, cropping might have improved that. Nonetheless a great shot and I wish you good luck.
I would've liked this better if either the owl dominated (larger) the shot or it was recomposed so he wasn't the center of it. Very nice as it is but could've been better in my opinion.
Beautifully photographed. The sharpness and the shallow DOF really help to set this off. The centered composition is not bad, I think mostly due to the erratic spread of limbs and branches that make up the remainder of the shot. I like the choice of B&W as well.
great shot...owls are wierd birds, aren't they :-) would have used the rule of thirds a bit better here as this almost looks in the centre and bothers me a tad, but wonderful shot you should be proud of it
