As an afterthought....the tree branches seem to represent a small portion of life watching, waiting helplessly while it observes the tradgedy at hand. It is a necessary element to this photo. You can almost feel the intense heat from the flames. This is a great picture with a statement. Good work Rick! Well deserved ribbon!
i think it is hilarious that there is such a difference in opinion over the tree branch .. i don find it annoying ... but i dont really feel it adds a 'live' aspect to the image either .. i just think it is there and thats ok.
I guess as thats what most people are commenting on I would on after view say well even though this shot won .. maybe a better version would be more of the tree .. or none of the tree .. it's nice to learn from others in such a way sometimes ..
This was a controlled burn by our local fire department on the building used by an animal shelter here. I was able to get within about 50 yards of the building and let me tell you, it was some intense heat.
One of the most dramatic images in all of dpc. I hope this is top 3. (probably 3rd if it is). I know things like this are hard to "think" about shooting, but did you use burst and pick out the best? Could you have moved so that branch wasn't in the way? Again - nitpicking. 10
what a disaster! but the image is first rate the flame, ash, smoke and ruins come to gether so well. I cant make my mind up about the tree...I think it adds to the perspective. good job 8
Well that BBQ didn't go as planned. Great depth to this with masses of detail, action and tangible feeling of heat. Structure in the midst is a little too central perhaps. [8]
Wonderful capture - one of the secrets of good photography is of course getting yourself to the right place at the right time. The foreground tree adds some useful contrast to the intensity of the fire. Excellent exposure, wonderful detail and there's still some sense of movement there. My only slight gripe is that I might like to have seen more context than that single branch - certainly meets the challenge, but for me in a slightly too straightforward way - in that it's only about heat, and not about, for instance, reaction to heat as well.
This certainly is a very chaotic fire. While it speaks 'hot' in volumes, I do not find it that pleasing to the eye. Composed as a photojournalism type shot. My favorite part is the eyes departure to the live tree branch.
This is a great shot! The colors of the flames and the smoke make it really interesting. I can't really make out the size of the building, or whats going on there, and that makes it more interesting. The green branch is a bit weird foreground for such a "hellish" enviroment, but I don't think its worse. Like the crop. 9
Well I hope you did nt get any comments that say you dont meet the challenge. I really like shots where you have to be in the right place at the right time, and you certainly were. ( well unless you set the fire -kidding). I find the falling timber in all directions most interesting to look at. I also like the contrast of you having left the healthy branch in. nice work. p.s. hope you didn;t suffer smoke inhalation.
I'd like to see this darker and see deep, dark smoke and saturated fire, but that's probably just a personal preference on my part. Really super shot and very communicative. 9
