Mt Pelee caused one of the worst volcanic disasters at the turn of the 20th century, wiping out capital, St Pierre, known as the Little Paris of the Antilles at that time. 29000 people perished. Only 3 survivors including one who became a show freak for Barnum Circus.
Alas, our climb up, altho' not too difficult, was cumbersome because of rain and heavy mist. 500m ascent in 2.5 hrs.
