This is one shot of over 400 I took during a long dress rehearsal for the Providence Ballet Youth Company's Spring '05 perfomance. I had to shoot at ISO 800 to avoid flash (I wanted to capture the beautiful late afternoon light from the large studio windows).I also needed to be as unobtrusive as possible and flash would have been very distracting to the dancers. I would have loved to blur the background a bit but I don't have the lens capability (nor at this moment even the software).I'm sure if I had better equipment this would have turned out really lovely. Well, one has to make the best of what one has. I hope what it lacks in image quality, it makes up for in mood and composition. We'll see.
I love the classic, un-self-conscious pose of this beautiful young dancer. She was in her own world, preparing for the rehearsal that was about to start. I'm sure she was feeling like a prima ballerina in her tutu. This is actually cropped from a larger image which included some other dancers giggling off to her right. I just wish I could have captured the moment at a slower speed so as not to lose so much detail in her skin and hair.

This is a wonderful image, but the thing that would have really made the image pop is a much more shallow dof. The walls in the background definitely take away from the subject. Even just blurring them would have helped to focus on the person.
What all young girls dream of doing, to dance. Lovely soft image. I would have loved it more, if you could have seen her reflection in the mirrow on the right as well.
Suggestion: crop in from the left to eliminate the open area beyond the end of the white "frame". This area is a distraction from your main subject, the young ballerina. Also clone out the tabler edge or whatever it is below the mirror on the right, since this, too, draws the eye away from your subject. I really like the colours in the image and the pose of the ballerina.
I like the composition of this. I feel as if it's screaming for post editing. I see it with an aged filter or perhaps a bit of grain with black and white. As it is, it kind of is lackluster, but not bad, just not outstanding. I hope this helps.
I think this could do with 3 main alterations.
- I think it needs to be rotated slightly anti-clockwise since the first line you look at is the one by her face, and that one isnt vertical.
- It would look really nice with a soft focus diffuse glow or something to make it seem dreamy. It would also hide some of the noise that seems to be in your photo.
- A very slight USM because it seems slightly out of focus currently
