This photo was not easy to make. I was the photographer, model and makeup artist. Plus I had a cold and my son was not in his best mood.
The focus may be a little of but I still like it and I hope it shows what a proud mother I am. :)
In Photoshop I did a few things. I used channel mixer to turn it b/w, used gaussian blur to smooth the skin out a little, did some sharpening and fiddled with levels and contrast.

I love your picture. I reminds me of a painting in the Czech National Gallery, a 16th century nursing Madonna... not one of those horrible stylized monstrosities, but a peasant girl nursing a real child... painted at the time the child just falls asleep. It is my favorite image... yours has risen to a close second.
This is an AMAZING shot of such a BEAUTIFUL, PASSIONATE and CARING MOTHER, no matter what the circumstances...you did a FABULOUS JOB!
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
Thanks for sharing,

Very beautiful photo. There is so much love radiating from your expression, and I think it captures an emotive example of motherhood. As for the technical aspects, I think that high-key works very well for this shot, and all the skin tones are really nice and soft. The composition is excellent, and everything is in nice sharp focus. The plain white background is great since it leaves all the viewer's focus on the primary subjects. Wonderful job!
The critique I am doing is for "me as a mother" picture.
First Impression - the most important one: my god, why did I draw this one, its great, its perfect .. she actually tells me the whole story of the picture!
Composition: I like the composition of this shot. Black and white really did work, and I like the leading lines that go from your babies face to yours. You can tell that is one lucky wee man, cos his mum loves him.
Subject: You can't really get a better choice of subject matter, as shown by eight of the top ten pictures.
Technical (Colour and light): The use of contrast and lighting here is great. I also like the way the light plays on your hair.
To grow its vote?: Do you need to grow the vote. Not this time really. This was a good scoring challenge, and you did score well.
Summary: You have done some awesome work .. your portfolio really shows that.

It's been said a hundred times, but I'll say once again, "Absolutely Beautiful image". One that I'm sure will be treasured for years to come. Congrats!!! Also amoung my 'Favorites'.
Great Photo. I love the way you did not lose any of the detail or clarity in the picture and gave it a great feel with the B&W and white balance. I give you kudos in being photographer, model..etc. I know how hard it is to get right with the addition of a leading man that may or may not be willing to co-operate..great job and congrats.
Congrats on your second ribbon. Very loving atmosphere. Flott stemmning. Spurning hvort yfirlýsing hársins er til ama eins og sumum finnst. Mér finnst frekar að fingur þínir séu ekki nógu afslappaðir og skapi óþarfa spennu. Samt frábær mynd.
To me there is no better way for a mother to give love to a child. I loved this and was hoping you would win the blue, but second is good too since I also had given the number one image a ten s well.
You did great and I am sure as your child grows older they will cherish this image.
I am so glad to see this get a ribbon, it was one of my favorites in the challenge. I wondered, when I was looking at it, if you were the photographer as well as the model; you did a superb job with this. Congratulations!
I love this even more now, because you were not only the photographer, but also the mother and make-up artist. Wow, what a combination..... You so deserved the Red Ribbon. What a wonderful image you can both look at, many years down the track, so perfect.
I hoped this would do good and feared it wouldn't. This is the most natural bonding moment between child and mother but in this pc world it's some kinda taboo. Glad to see this shot achieve what this voter believes to be it's value!
Kudos

7 - Nice and the toning works well here. Good composition and capture on 'Mother's' face. Criticism; mainly the 'blowing' on the Mother's hair, but very difficult I imagine to control, especially using this toning. Perhaps a variation in lighting may have helped. Having said that, it does add a certain element to this shot, but if it were a fraction more subtle, make this even better in my opinion. Perhaps a slightly tighter crop on the right, and more 'baby' on the left (dependent of course what you had to work with) may also have made this even better.
Generally speaking, I am not keen on b+w photos, nor on the high key approach. Yet here you have combined both and I love it, it works. Lighting, composition, Mom's facial expression..... everything comes together into one very beautiful photo. 9
Perfect representaion. Gave it an immediate 10. Cant see a thing wrong with this, the lighting, the texture of the hair, placement of the hands and the smile are perfect, if this doesnt ribbon....
This is nice, but I think and this is only my opinion, but I think that sepia toning or even their actual skin tones would have worked better for this shot. To me its look metallic. I'm sorry I can't describe it any better.
very nice, definitelly fits the theme, I like the high key style, just wish the hair wasn't overexposed. A little softer lighting would help. i'm curious about what lighting you used in this photo. There is a little bit of harsh shadow accross the left face.
This should do well. very nice picture. Small crit-- the piece of thumb in the bottom of the picture detracts slightly. Would removing it be moving a major element? bump to 8
Great portrait. Everything looks natural and beautiful. I think I would have burned mom's hair just a tiny bit to try to save that highlight. Otherwise the high key works well. 9
My favorite from the challenge. A wonderful image that just screams "mother" without having to look for it. I hope it's not too bold for the other voters and you end up on the front page for this one. Good luck.
Beautifully done. I like the high key aspect of the photo. Maybe the hair is a bit overdone, but this image is just too precious to let a little thing like that hold it back. I love it. Hope to see this as one of the top finishers.
I really wish I could vote on member's challenges (hoping the check will get three soon) ... great use of high key lighting and the subject is just touching. I believe I see a ribbon.
This is absolutely beautiful! I think I would like it even more if it wasn't a tad over-exposed, but it stands out and is an amazing picture anyway! Good luck! 9
Very sweet photo -- I haven't nursed in three and a half years and I just about had a letdown. ;) I like the high-key lighting/background. Only problem is the shadow of the nose. 7.
