I think you'd have a much better image if you changed the lighting, I'd like to see more seperation between the edges of the hands and background. the nice tight crop helps the composition.
First, this isn't a photograph that strongly emotes "mother." I get the tie in with mother of perl, but it's not very emotive. I don't really know what the flower petals have to do with anything, except that they are colorful and pretty.
Second, this photo looks like it could use some different processing. The edges of the fingers on the left side are rather jaggedy. I'm not sure if that's from over sharpening, or JPEG compression, but either way it detracts.
