Quite a difference between the highlights and shadows so I had to use some filters to knock the light down.
Filters used: Polarizer + 2 stop ND Grad + 3 stop ND Grad
The mountains are the Maroon Bells. It is the most photographed location in Colorado, in the warm months. I was the only one up there in the blistering cold.
I wanted to convey the feeling of cold and desolation while keeping the light & color accurate to the scene.
Unfortunately, the downsizing doesn't even begin to show this image off. It looks great BIG! :D

If the picture itself was a little sharper or less artifacts (probably due to jpg compression
I don't agree with that at all. Where's he seeing artifacts?
It's perfect! The only thing I see that may have caused lower votes is the border...these voters don't seem to like big borders.
An excellent capture!
You got ripped off on this one, I thought it should have ranked higher. If the picture itself was a little sharper or less artifacts (probably due to jpg compression), I would argue it should have taken a ribbon.
Beautiful. Seems a bit on the grainy side but nothing I would take points away for. Great capture for this challenge. I'm sure you earned this one with some frozen fingers!
Great timing. Just a touch of reflection in the water. The blues really make this photo. Great find and well shot. I also like the camera positioning. Very nice indeed Hope it scores high.
This really has a WOW factor to it but I think the heavy black boarder is pinning it in too much. If I were framing this for a gallery wall, I think it would look best under just glass or in a floating frame. Nice work!
A beautiful winter scene. All of the variations of blue are soothing and interesting. It's like the mountains are encircling me and drawing me in. Well done!!!
Correct me if I"m wrong, but this looks an awful lot like the Maroon Bells. This is a very beautiful and well done photo. You mastered a difficult exposure situation.
Absolutely gorgeous. The border and burning around the edge seems a little heavy. I think you would want this image to look larger than life rather than contained. A thin border might have been better. The color and composition are perfect.
Beautifully captured - a wonderful range of tones and beautiful light and shade. This has a great feeling of tranquillity to it and a strong composition. Excellent!
This is an interesting compostion that the eye is automatically drawn into this shot not only because of the cold majesty of the mountain in the center, but the curve of the landscape on both sides that act as a form of tunnel vision to focus our attention to the center. Very beautiful capture with the blanket of snow covering the ground adds visual interest to the overall scene. Plus the viewer really gets a sensation of the cold as we gaze upon the scene.
