That would appear to be either a Anhinga or a Cormorant. Without color I can't tell which. Both species are very common where I live in Florida, but I know you can also find them along other coastlines in the US. They also call them "snake birds" since their neck looks like a snake sticking out of the water like this shot, and "vampire birds" because when they come out of the water they have to hold their wings out to dry off. They do not have oil in their feathers like ducks or geese to keep them afloat so that they can instead dive down deep in the water to catch fish. |
