i would like to see softer and more diffused lighting for this image. the shadow's a bit distracting to my eye.

I'm seeing a lot of photos like this. A nice collection, carefully arranged, and the photo taken with the flash attached to the camera. The flat lighting just kills everything. You have a good eye, and your technique is otherwise good. Try disabling the flash on your camera, and keep shooting!
