My 5 year old son and I were up late playing around with lighting and shadow effects. This is probably too dark, but it was my favorite just due to his expression. The photo was a bit grainy tried to fix it slightly with g blur. I did do one spot edit, there was a hot pixel right behind his ear that I fixed.

If people couldn't see something they really should fix their monitor settings. I can see your son very good. And I like your technique! It makes the photo interesting. The face of your son expresses a somewhat darker mood and the very dark lighting goes with that.
very dark. i think this kind of photography is all about contrast and areas of very bright light to highlight the contours and shapes of the subject. this loses all of that by using a very low, flat light which doesn't really set the subject apart from the background. 3.
This pic intrigues me. The thumbnail looks almost all black. I enjoy seeing the face appear out of the darkness when I see it close. You get a lot of detail for such little light, but it is still just too dark for me.
I'm sure you've already comments stating the photo is too dark, or to some monitors, appears to have nothing there at all... I did a levels adjustment in Photoshop to be able to see the image, and I find it a really compelling portrait that could have done well - if only it could be seen.
Had to import this one on photoshop to find out what it was all about. Not a bad picture but you were realy a little heavy handed on the black that day.
I'm sorry I can not see anything? this is the only image like this. I just came home and set my screen all the way to the top...and now I see your image... you can not get anymore black on black than you did! given the way things have gone this time you get my vote...9
I can see the face of the child, but barely. I'm sure you're hearing a lot of "too dark" comments, so I'm not going to pitch in. The expression on the child's face is very nice, like a "little thinker".
I''m sorry, but for me this is way too dark, even for a low-key or black-on-black shot. My monitor is professionally calibrated and, yes, I can see the portrait, but ... 5 Jak
Unfortunately, your shot is completely black. I can see every other submission to this challenge (even Black Feather, for which I had to turn up my already-calibrated monitor), but I can't see yours, even with Contrast and Brightness pumped all the way to 100%. Sorry, the inside of the lens cap is not a valid low-key choice. :->
To me this epitomizes Black on Black/Low-key. Maximum detail with minimal use of light. You could have even ligthened it up a little. I used This as my basis for voting. 8 (Avg. Vote Cast in Challenges to date 5.1344) Hope the link is working :)
wonderful. But I think you are really going to suffer from the 'too black' vote as on a couple of monitors I looked at this on , there is nothing there!
your image is gonna get hammered. I can barely see this child and my monitor is calibrated. It\'s so faint that many are gonna see nothing but a black frame.
this might be a tad too dark, which is a shame, since i'm sure it wasn't and you just darkened it for this ridiculous challenge. I've seen the worst shots on here yet. This could be one of the best of them if it was just a little lighter. I believe you can have your highlights at 30% black for lowkey, which is actually pretty light. I'm still scoring this high, but it's a bit of a challenge to look at it in itself!
The thumb looks pitch black, the photo looks fricking awesome! Very cool usage of both low key photography and black on black. excellent job! I'm guessing quite a bit of this was done in photoshop, but it's just very well done. I like your use of negative space on the left side of the photo, makes you wonder what this kid is looking at. Once again... well done, this is the photo that first caught me eye, it's the first one I'm voting on, so it's definitely my first 10 :-) Good lucK!
