A giraffe taken at Toronto Zoo with a Nikon D1x camera and a Nikkor VR 80mm-400mm f4.5-f5.6 D series lens on a tripod. With the lens racked out to the full 400 mm focal length.
This baby was born at 200 lbs and is growing at a rate of 1" a day. WOW!

Cute shot, love the tongue! I'll bet you're getting heck over the sqareness of your image! (I feel for you!!!) Very strong image with very good details. Color seems very good. (Are you getting comments about the border being distracting or off color - if so...don't sweat it - it's not the photo, which is magnificent! 9 Rob the Swash
There are a lot of National Geo cover images in this challenge, including one of the more humorous and creative images I've seen in a long time. But yours is the best. It is certainly worthy for the cover of National Geographic. Terrific job.
nice photo. I would like to have seen the image more in the shape of the magazine and the border looks a little green on my monitor rather than gold. I like the tounge too.
What a cutie! Can you believe giraffes have the same amount of vertibrae as we humans!!!
Focus could be a bit sharper. I like how you caught the tongue out! Great timing.
This is a perfect subject for a portrait orientation, and yet the image appears to be almost square here. Not a bad capture, but the lack of the eye is a disappointment. 5 Jak
