Challenge:Sound (Classic Editing) Camera:Nikon Coolpix 5700 Location: My garage turned into a temporary fairly dark stud Date: May 31, 2003 Aperture: f 3.6 ISO: 400 Shutter: 1.18 sec Galleries:Family, Studio Date Uploaded: May 31, 2003
This turned out very close to my vision. But it did take time and patience. I play trumpet but not often enough to produce a sweet sound. How was it done? Blacked out the garage; then used lots of black paper and 1 white card, a large plate + box cutter (stanley knife)to cut the hole, lots of sticky tape, 3 ladders and two 40 W lights, one for the trumpet, the other for behind the face, which was supposed to be in silhouette. The image was black clipped, pushed away from red, contrast increased and NetImage applied (although the latter did little).
I really must buy some proper lights. . . . . .

I must say, you went to a lot of trouble to get your picture for this challenge! Box cutters, sticky tape, ladders, lights ... good thing you weren't trying to board a plane.
Our oldest son plays the jazz trumpet. He used to practice endlessly when he still lived with us, and I oftentimes would feel like doing what the person is doing in your cutout. So, during the voting your picture brought back memories of lots of sound - I guess what I'm saying is that IMO your picture fit the challenge quite nicely.
About the picture itself, I love the colours. The gold of the trumpet is beautiful, as is the black background and the white behind the silhouette. I like the golden glow around the head, and you couldn't have desaturated because then you would have lost the trumped colour also. The trumpet is nicely in focus without being oversharpened. I find the glare and in particular the reflections from stuff in the garage a bit distracting (since you were working so hard, you could have covered EVERYTHING in your garage - just joking :). I would have liked to see the whole trumpet (the mouthpiece is cut off).
Two suggestions with which to play around:
1) Could you have made the cutout larger, so that a little portion of it would be covered by the trumped (overlap)? In my head that looks good, but I don't know how it would work out.
2) I think I would prefer that the trumped were not quite on a straight diagonal, bottom left to top right (again I'm not sure, just something I'm trying to see).
Must be a Konador (spelling and I think I've seen you do an image of a trumpet in the past). I am especially impressed with your setup... Black background with a hole, subject in hole backlit. Very creative. Assuming you are Ben, I envy the fact that digital photography/internet/image editing etc etc is available at this point in your life. I loved photography as a teenager/early 20's, but couldn't afford to go crazy with it. I'm happy to see the way you utilize the technology along with your natural talent! You do great work and you are getting better all the time.
If you are not Ben, I like your image and please forward this comment to Konador!!!!
LOL
*tilts head* How did you do this? Well, hopefully it'll be obvious post-challenge.
The problem for me with the concept of this photo is that as the trumpet is not currently being played, the fingers-in-ears thing is less of a good match. The basic concept is sound, it's the precise implementation that I'm not as keen on.
10 for concept, 10 for execution: 10 overall. :-> Dramatic; I love the silhouette in the back. Just the trumpet wouldn't be nearly as strong.. I hear the photo (which is my major grading criteria for this contest), and it's an appealing image overall.
Shame you couldn't desaturate the yellow around the person... other than that I love this picture. Great compostition, I like the blown out highlights on the trumpet. I would perhaps have tinkered with the hue a little in photoshop... can't quite put my finger on it. 9
LOL... this is wonderful... very very well done... really gives a sense of sound, and loudness... I'd prolly be covering my ears as well. This is just fantastic... beautiful job! the one thing I might have liked to see is the lips of the person blowing the horn. Still I think I would put it a 9 but for creativity I'm giving it a -10- nice job!
