The ladder is being suspended by two scarily thin wire cables held by my dad and brother. (I really had to convince them, especially my dad that I wouldn't die.) Due to ye-olde-leverage-laws, it was very easy for them to hold (I also dug a little hole in the ground before they came out to set the ladder bottom in so it wouldn't slide out from under me when I was on it.)I set the camera on timer, ran, slowly climbed up the ladder, and hoped for the best. We were only out in that field for about 5 pictures before I got it how I saw it in my head.
I wanted this to represent not only the destination up, but more in the way of a metaphor for constantly 'climbing' life and reaching new destinations. I didn't want it to look like I was dead or something and going to heaven, so I wore bright colors and edited it like so.
It is a big improvement from my 4th place DQ'd room entry, which was taken in the same place.
The end!

... after looking at all your pictures... I've come to a conclusion. I think that you have way too much talent. It's really not necessary. I feel that you should share some of your awesome skill with someone who needs it. Like me.
Amazing pictures, I really like them all. You're really planning on taking this whole photography thing somewhere, aren't you?
Clever and inspiring work. I like that you add how you did the pictures. This one is so different from the Desolation one I just commented on, but I like them both equally.
Wow, I can imagine your brother and father's concern. Great image though, that cloud at top left really adds a lot. It's upward-sweeping shape adds a lightness and lift that wouldn't be there with a clear sky.
Your creativity is boundless and for someone your age you are very articulate. I always enjoy finding out which pic is yours in the challenge. Congratulations on being able to create the picture you saw in your head.
Hey, just think. I was going to post on your MIB shot that I was really missing seeing ribbons with your name on them lately. Now I just feel dumb. :)
And look dumb. And sound dumb, but that's another issue altogether. ;)
Keep it up guy!
PS. I actually did this before. I was a window washer in Canada and sometimes there are places and things you just can't get at due to landscaping and houses on weird terrain. I was lighter than my buddy, so I climbed up the ladder and he held it steady a few inches from a window. It was only really scary going up and down. I went right to the top, about twenty five feet up, about the same height as your ladder.
The thing that p!sses me off about this is that I didn't do it! Congrats .. the effort paid off. You got 4 scores of "2" ...
that always gets me! Who are these 2'ers???
Congratulations on two in a row! I wondered how this was done, I thought perhaps it was against a hidden pole you placed in the ground, but the wire idea was great!
Congrats Joey
Good to see you doing light and bright shots as well. And you do them as well as the dark, grungy fogmachine shots :)
So, the trick was something as simple as a thin wire. Very good. Are they at all wisible on the photo if one knows where to look?
The lighter side of Joey is just as kick a** as the dark side. Congrats dude!!! You know you rock! The shot definitly deplicts you moving up, 2 ribbons in a row! Rock On!
you just won 2 blue ribbons straight in a row. Batman, have you got a new "super-duper amazing camera" that shoots a photo just by imagining it? hehe... I know there's a lot of hard work involved. well deserved, buddy, and CONGRATS (again) ! *applause*
Joey you never cease to amaze me with your talent. The effort you put into some (most) all your shots is great and it shows in your photography. I believe as you put the same effort in life you will go a long way. A well planed shot and nature worked out to your advantage with a wonderful sky and lighting.
You are one amazin' dude Joey! This is an extremely creative and very well executed photo. Congrats man. (Now go on a looong vacation or something ;-P )
this is amazing and actually I have pondered doing a shot like this, thinkin I would tie wires to trees to suspend the ladder. It's awesome man, makes me mad I haven't dont this yet haha
Most excellent vision and who am I kidding.. Yer da bomb mister.. that picture rocks!! I was wondering how you achieved it!! Congrats on the double blue.. bows down :)
Go Joey: that is two in a row and even though you whipped me, I am very happy for you. That image certainly intrigued me and i thought of the few ways that it can be done.
I can see why this photo needed validating! I'd think about requesting it myself if I didn't see that it had been done already... I can't wait to see the explanation! I don't see how this could fail to be in the top 5
ok so how did you do this. love the colors of the sky but the grass just seems a little flat, just my thought, but maybe bump up the saturation a bit on the grass, again just my thinking.
Great illusion and I love the colors. The subject seems a little small and a little too centered on the horizontal. I would like to see less foreground since it really does nothing to contribute to the overall image and perhaps a slightly tighter crop. I wouldn't take anything off the top though.
Reminds me of a stock photo I had seen. The subject is surreal but the background is too real. So it just doesn't come together for me even tho' it's generally a nice pic.
this is real good. it will be interesting to know how you did create this illusion, when the challenge is done. the composition is good and so are the tech.parts of this photo so I predict top 5
Good luck
I'm trying to work out if you used cables to hold the ladder and cloned them out or you have some sort of frame hidden just behind the rise... I think the second option ?
the shot has good colors and lighting, but the shot dose not seem balanced to me
maybe moving the space from the bottom and right to the top and left would have helped so it would look like you were climbing more into space - 7
This is awesome Joeeeeeyyyyy.
How did you do it?
*scratches her head*
This is the same place you recreated the Bliss wallpaper, isn't it? :)
Good job! Very nice and light and happy.
Wonderful! I love this image. The colors & composition are nice, but the concept and execution is marvelous. I can't wait to hear how to you did it! 10
