Here I wanted to do something very different from the common liquid splash. The properties of milk are amazing in stop motion because milk appears to take on the look of a sculpture. It looks more like wax or plastic. I did experiment with it before and did an image which I was going to enter in the past "Macro" challenge. Well, I didn't because some people will argue the macro virtues. So I entered the image elsewhere and won.
When the milk challenge appeared I did nothing until Tuesday at 3:00 pm, but was finished at 4:30 pm. This image is indeed a macro because the bottle is only 2 1/2" tall. Otherwise the mess would have bathed me and equipment. The original idea started as a vision and then to make it happen. I wanted milk to appear rising with a distinct cut off at the top, that is nothing poured. Here then is how it was accomplished:
I wanted a black bottom so as to get the nice semi dark tones against the white. I employed glossy black plastic as the base. It had to be flat, that is no plate or dish because then I would be back to a common splash. The rest was easy. You fill the bottle half way and then use a tablespoon (experimented with 1/2 and 1 ounce plastic measurers. The spoon was the best. You fill the spoon and then you flip it up and with the other hand press the shutter. You do this about twenty times and you wind up with all these wild apparitions. I did make an error in my set up and had to go back and reshoot again. A misplaced backlight spilled too much light near the background. This was corrected and the series retaken. I will post the other effort in my port under b/w.

i'm still trying to work out how a flipped spoon makes the kinda weird statue of milk on the right?
can you explain a little better for a simpleton like me? i've been playing with milk a bit myself to (didn't enter or know challenge was on) but i'm curious :-)
Daniel I have had trouble with my computer so have not voted lately but I must say I am in awe of your work
So well deserved and Congrats on your blue Ribbon I couldn't let it go by without my best wishes to you
Congratulations, Dan, this was a wonderful image and one of my favorites in this challenge..thanks for the explanation, too..it helps to learn how these things are done for future reference.
congratulations Dan; brilliant creativity and well executed; thanks as always on your explanation and discription of your idea and it's implementation.
Absolutely well-deserved! This is just the kind of shot that should be prominently featured on the front page of the site. Kudos for another extremely well-executed shot!
I find myself looking through challenges trying to figure out which one is yours. You are a true talent and a great asset to this site. What I find most impressive about your entries is the fact that you take the time to explain how it is done and do not hesitate to teach others. There are other photographers on this site who rack up the ribbons, but never take the time to explain the process they used to get the end result. You are truly underappreciated and I couldn't be more happy that you won another blue.
Woohoo! Great shot and great title, too! This is definitely something different from the typical splash shot. Very refreshing. Congratulations on the blue!
this image is head and shoulders above the rest. Very glad it came out on top, though I am still discouraged by its score and the number of low votes. Congrats - extremely well deserved!
I still don't understand how you did this. An amazing idea and you pulled it off, no problem. Your creativity inspires me to try to improve mine. Congrats on the well-won Blue.
What a truly amazing shot, very deserving of the win here. Congrats on another blue ribbon and your second highest challenge score. Keep the great stuff coming!
Amazing! How on earth did you manage to capture a shot like this? Luck and patience? I really like the composition of this image, lighting is very good. Milk seems to have been a difficult one to capture without blowing out yet you've seemed to have done it perfectly. I'm predicting a very high position in this challenge for this image.
My one and only 10 of the challenge. This is just spectacular -- I'll look forward to reading the details on this one! If it doesn't win a ribbon, I shall fall into a deep depression :)
Wow. Great job on this photograph. I'm still trying to figure out how you did that. A little more original than other pictures with splashes of milk everywhere. Nicely done.
8 - Good shot. Criticism; no clue how you did this, but if the start of the 'flow' were a little higher, would have made this an even better shot in my opinion. Perhaps a slightly different angle too. Maybe 'zoomed out' slightly too. Not sure what the 'base background' is but it is a little distracting when looking hard at this shot, mainly because of what I think is the texture of it. That said, dependent what color that was, though this shot looks good in b/w, I am interested whether this shot would have looked better (for the Challenge) in color.
Yes! I am looking at all the "milk splash" pictures at once and this, in my opinion, is the best. That glob is so amazing I'm not quite sure what I'm even seeing. The splash is well frozen and everything is in focus. I would pick this as a ribbon winner. 10.
wow, thats a great capture..I am trying to think how did you throw the object that made it rebound like that... very cool effect...its got to be in the top10...
Awesome shot!! Can't think of anythign I would change. I lke how the droplets are clear and sharp, adn the composition really leads you back into the bottle (theoretically, any way!)
great shot !! a favorite for this challenge so far. The whites are nice and white and the clarity on the splash plus "homesick" milk is awesome. I love hte blackc background as well. Good work.
I know whos this is ;p..seen that same bottle somewhere else(right down to the scratches) good luck....great crisp focus and great capture of the milk in action. looks like u had way too much fun making a mess! 10 not because i know who u are but because you have produced another excellent image and perfect in all technical aspects!
