This appears to have been lit by a flash, which caused the objects surrounding the camera to be better lit than your intended subject. A light source behind the person would help to separate them from the surrounding darkness, while preserving the atmosphere.

this shot is vey very grainy and the image qualtiy is very poor. the use of on camera flash is what is robbing this shot of image quality

I am sorry to say, but I think this image is much too gray - it needs more contrast IMHO. It is also too grainy for my taste. Nice and atmospheric shot though.
