This is one of two photos I'm making the B&W vs. Color statement about. You are more than welcome to flame me once the votings over (although I'd really appreciate it if you didn't -- but I'd be happy to talk about it). Lots of good contrast -- I think maybe too much. The caterpillars just kind of blend into everything else. I wonder if this shot in color is easier to read because you have the colors of the caterpillars to set them apart from the branches and leaves. Perhaps not, I just don't know without being able to see the original. Otherwise, very clean shot -- nice focus and good tones.
It looks like some kind of alien. This is a pretty busy shot and all the branches are taking me away from the growth thingy in the middle of the photo. There is lots of detail and nice shades of grey in this photo.
This would make an interesting abstract if it were a little more vague, but as a nature shot I think the subject is completely overwhelmed by the background. Probably shows better in color. Cropped very tight it might work in B/W. Contrast is very good.
Nice lighting, but without the color to differentiate, I think the leaves really distract. Cropped in tighter on the caterpillars would have been a lot better, I think.
The caterpillar's are lost in the confusion of the branches. If you're going to shoot b/w you need a large distinction between your subject and background.
I'm sure this is an awesome shot in color (could you post that somewhere after the comp? I would love to see it), but IMO it does not work in b&w. Too busy, too little contrast.
(This is my first comment ever!) I'd like to just say that I feel there is a minor problem with this picture because it all seems to blend in, and I can't really tell what you were trying to do. I've been staring at it for about five minutes now, and I can't decide what it is, and what all the fuzzy things are meant to be. -Annida
I am able to see this caterpillar nest but it is quite difficult with the bright and dark contrasts throughout the photo... I'm not sure how this could be improved on this particular view...
