Challenge:Black & White (Classic Editing) Camera:Olympus C-3030Z Location: Outside my front door Date: May 29, 2002 Aperture: f5 ISO: 100 Shutter: 1/8 Date Uploaded: Jun 1, 2002
I found this snail on the porch outside my front door at 10pm. I quickly grabbled my camera broughout my desk light and started to take pictures. I started with 100, narrowed down to 5 and then finally selected this one. After doing a survey of about 8 people, this was the one that was chosen by those who were artists or appreciated art.

Thank you all for your comments. I knew there would be people that would say they wanted to see the snail more and I do have pictures with more light on the snail, but I enjoyed this picture the most. It has a sort of mystery as to the appearance of the slug. I also did not crop it in so tight cause I wanted you to see the bright light on the left an the shadow on the right. I think it all adds to the picture.
lighting needs some work to bring out the snail shell. Maybe a different orientation would have allowed you to fill the frame too ? Has the elements of a effective shot.
I find myself wishing the light was coming from the other direction. Also, nature photos should be cropped in tight around the subject. Curious: Did you take any macro shot of just the shell?
very nice--love the lighting and the DOF that really brings the snail and leaf into perspective. I also like the symmetry between the lines on the snail and the lines on the leaf. good eye and good job!
The lighting on the snail is incredible... including the fact that his antenna are backlit so that they are easily seen. I think the only (small) recommendation I would make is that I would have cropped it a bit tighter so that the shadow on the right was a bit less noticable.
Very beautiful. The depth of field is nice, the texture of the background, the contrast, the framing, but I especially love the paralell between the ribs in the leaf and the radial grooves all around the spiral of the snail's shell. 10 from me.
One of my personal favorites this week. My one I wish would be that the snail's head was a little bit better lit, but that would admittedly be hard to do if you wanted to keep the shell well defined.
This shot would've been awesome (and is still pretty good) if it wasn't so dark (or is it just my monitor? but most other shots submitted look ok to me). Love ghe composition (consider moving the leaf and snail just a tad more to the left / your camera to the right) and the detail that is visible and your DOF.
I wish the light was coming from the right and not the left for better detail on the snail. The bottow also is out of focus and that is distracting a bit.
Nice photo and an original idea that works well for B&W. What I might suggest, though somewhat reservedly, is a tough of light from the right and brush the little bit of dust from the shell and the leaf. Maybe a reflector would make an improvement, I don't know for sure about that. However, in my opinion this is already an excellent photo.
