I must say I'm not sure what your idea was behind this entry. The fact that it was not obvious is certainly the reason why you didn't get better votes.
First, let's talk about the subject you chose. Maybe I am missing something, but for me baseball is not representative of a region or a specific city. You would never find a postcard with "baseball" as the subject in a store... So, this is the main problem for me with this entry: I think the subject is irrelevant. Unless, once again, in case I am missing something. But then it is not obvious enough to make a good picture.
Technically there are also a few things that bother me. This image is tilted. The ground is tilted a few degrees and I find this quite distracting. You also make a very strong statement using this very reduced DOF. For me it means: the main subject is my feet, not the background. I guess this picture is not all about your sneakers, so I think this reduced DOF was a mistake. I understand you maybe wanted to convey the idea of relaxing in front of a game. But then the technique you used was not the right one.
So, I'm sorry: I realize this critique may sound a bit harsh, but I don't understand this picture and the idea you wanted to convey. Some people did obviously, reading the comments. This demonstrates a critique is a very personal thing you shouldn't take too seriously. Someone else from the Critique Club might have done a very different one. But it turned out that this image just doesn't make it for me for the reasons I described. I just hope this helps and that I didn't hurt your feelings too much because I didn't mean to... :-)
It's simple, it's universal. The lighting is perfect for your effect (relaxing near the end of the day) and the players don't matter because of your focus. I love this shot.
Nice use of dof. The picture is good on its own, but I'm not sure it is the best representation of your town. IMO this could be just about any town in America, but maybe you just live in a really small, boring place :) Also, a lot of the more "finished" looking shots in this challenge used frames nicely which makes it look more professional even if you wouldn't really see it on a postcard.
I like the use of Depth of field, but it would have been more powerful with baseball cleats in the pic instead of normal running shoes. And maybe also putting a team name on the picture to give it more of a postcard feel would have helped.
