i think the light distracts a bit too much from the subject. when i shoot birds i put my camera into fast shooting mode and use the manual focus so i can take tons of shots quickly because these damn things move around too quickly.

Looks like this guy decided to leave as you were taking your shot. Too bad about the lamp post being in the way, or it could have been a great shot.

I think if the seagul was reversed with the light, this photo would have been far more effective. Too bad you weren't standing on the other side *grin* However the composition is unusual and I like it.
