Taken at night in front of the lighted fountain at the movie theater. Used the headlights of my car parked about 50 yards away from the subject for light.

The background is really nice and makes for an excellent effect. The lighting seems a little too harsh though. Not that you would want real soft lighting for this subject, but the shadows are really deep here.
The photo is good, focus, color, etc well done. The background hurts your shot. In your case, try standing tall (or on a chair/box/etc) and shoot more down at the subject and the fountain. Watch your lighting, notice the fingers on the fretboard? (hint: no finger tips visible) Photo 9 Creativity 8 People 8 total 8
How did you get him to agree to post this on the Internet? (or does he know?)Some fill flash might have helped with shadows and to bring out more emphasis on the subject and less on the background.
Seems to be excessive shadows in the front and on the top left of his head.
That background is way too busy for a portrait. It keeps pulling the eye away from the person. Might've used a larger aperture so that it would've been blurry back there instead.
I like the pose and expression but the composition seems to draw the eye to the guitar instead of the person. Maybe a camera shift right might've helped.
