First of all, the goal of photography is to "inspire", and this shot certainly does fulfill that goal.
Creativity: This is a very creative shot of a subject that has been photographed literally millions of times. The cropping and zoom are excellent.
Aesthetics: For a photograph to be compelling, it has to be something you want to look at, and keep looking at. Again, this image succeeds. I can easily see this hanging in the lobby or waiting room of a corporate office building.
Furthermore, there are no items in photograph that "don't belong" It is very common for a great shot to be reduced to an average shot, because there is something in the shot that is "distracting". The viewer can't enjoy the image, because there are one or more things in the image that are distracting. Again, no problems here. The subject is simple and clean and there are no "hot spots", dust spots, etc.
Technical Details:
Finally, you can have a great subject, perfect conditions and timing, and still end up with an average shot if you don't understand the science of photography (lighting, depth of field, etc.)
I don't see any technical issues with this shot. It is well lit and sharply focused.
Possible improvements:
If I were to play with image at all, I would try two things. First I would burn the eyes a little to see if I couldn't get some the details of the iris' to come out. Second, I would dodge the top of the beak a little to bring out the richness and contrast. I will send you a PM of these two edits as an example.
Conclusion:
Great shot. Congratulations on your first first blue ribbon.
A black and white double mat with a black metal frame would be outstanding for a wall mount. 18x18 for the frame size. Extremely nice capture. Fine detail. Well framed crop.
I wish the DOF was a bit deeper to catch the eyes, but still a new favorite.

I agree with riot. I think the compostion is perfect and adds to the overall photographic striking quality of this picture. To me, it's the perfect shot, and couldn't be improved on in any way!!! I'm still amazed by it every time I see it!!! I want to try to get a capture like this. It blows me away.
The squareness of the frame detracts from the nature (the type) of the subject. With this type of subject, I'd like to see a more rounded composition with depth.
My comment is made not in terms of the challenge goals, but in terms of the general photographic quality of the subject and the manner in which it was presented (composed).
I just knew this one was going to ribbon! I am so glad it did. It is an AWESOME shot! You have some awesome work in your profile!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!
I thought I had seen all there was to see with the "Bird head shots" but this breaks new ground...unbelievably detailed.
Great work and a worthy blue.
Congratulations.
Congrat's on your first ribbon! When you posted your score, I knew I was whipped. There will be no mice creeping by our monitors this week. Very nice :)
Great shot... I would mention the light, focus, incredible sharpness, composition, etc. etc. But we both know it's all good. Good luck ! You probably don't need luck, but just in case, it would be a shame not to see this get a ribbon.
It might be just a touch oversharpened, but this is an excellent, high quality image. I hope the triangle in this image is apparent enough to voters to give it the high score it deserves.
After voting on about a third of these already, this shot is by far the front runner. Excellent photo. If I had something to complain about it would be lack of a catchlight in the eyes. However, given the closeness to the bird (telephoto or not) he probably would have been pissed by a flash and bit your nose off.
Total amazment. Technically job well done. What a beautiful capture. You should win a ribbon with this one. One of my top 3. 10 from me and a new favorite.
This picture is breathtaking ... the details, the triangular form made by the beak and eyes, plus the strong yellow color and fierce look of the hawk. Wow!
Great photo. Beautiful capture of feather detail. Perfect DOF. I looks like there are some sharpening artifacts on the beak. Too bad you couldn't use advanced editing to remove them. Among my tip picks and a likely ribbon winner.
Beautiful image. The symmetry is perfect, which is hard to pull off in a shot like this. Very original triangle in this one also, but I was so busy admiring the image, I forgot all about the challenge topic, for once. :)
This is maybe a crop from a bigger photo to this competion? The pic is skillfully made. The sharpness is not in eyes but it still works! My favourite to the 1st place of this competion.
Very strong triangle fee without an actual triangle great job. I just love the richness of the colors and the increadable amount of betail you managed to capture. All around great image 8
Oh Wow!!! How awesome is THAT!!! The sharpness is nothing short of amazing! Since the dpChallenge voters seems to be having a thing about birds lately (including me :), I have a feeling you are going to be right in position for a ribbon with this shot. I absolutely love it! Here is probably one of many 10's :)
Absolutely gorgeous shot! I can't believe how close up & detailed this is! I've given out very few 10s, but this is certainly worthy! Outstanding job! (10)
For an animal or bird-related challenge, I would have given this shot a 9 or 10, for the triangle challenge, it just doesn't really work for me. Great shot of the bird!
This will do well, especially considering the nature of DPC. I like this a lot, congratulations on a top capture. This is an 8 for me, although I don't really like the subject I think this is a great shot nonetheless. Nice one.
