This is a piece of cement from the wall at the world famous surfing beach in Malibu, California.
The piece of cement has painted markings on it, evidence of Southern California's spray paint artists who leave their markings along the country side and cityscapes. Here the painted markings reminded me of the "battle lines" drawn on war room maps that define the boundaries of battle. (Battles take place on the waves at Malibu among the surfers who fight for the perfect wave)
After much debat with myself and printing many images both black and white and color, I decided to go with this image. Color saturation was kept to a minimum for a couple reasons. One being the paint has faded over time, the other being I like the "almost black and white image that the color is contrasted against.
No studio secrets, the chip of cement was photographed with a black background with two photo floods.

Is that concrete? This image would benefit from better lighting and a more defined purpose. Sure there is red and yellow, but why should the viewer care? What questions does it pose?
I like the colors, although I don't think that the black background does much to enhance the subject. It also looks like maybe it was oversharpened a little bit too much.
