Beautiful image. Congratulations. I'm glad that you didn't bump up the contrast on it too much. The eveness of the tones and the composition really make the shot.
Thanks for all the feedback. The photo is pretty much a straight shot. I cropped and desaturated.
As for if it fits the challenge, the ideas is that the ship is anchored due to the fog. So the implication is that the ship's crew is "passing time" waiting for the fog to lift.
The shot was at the Bonnet Carrie Spillway in Norco, Louisiana on the Mississippi river.
The bird is an egret. I tried to get a closer shot but he wasn't happy with that and flew away.
I agree that I probably should have taken the stick out but I didn't notice it until I saw it in the comments. That is why I joined this site was for the feedback.
This was my first real submission and it was very exciting. I think I'll try it again. :-)
Thanks again for taking the time to critique this photo and for all the positive comments.
I really enjoy the dynamic the fog plays in this picture. It gives everything a nice ghostly stillness that works well with your title and of course the challenge. The focus looks pretty good, considering the fog gives everything a general haze as it is. The use of natural light works very well.
I wish there was a bit more contrast to the image though, if the ship was a smidge darker, its dark hull being brought out a little more to let it coincide with the silhouette of the bird, I think that would make the image just that much more interesting. It would also help create an even stronger contrast to the grey fog/mist.
I'm not sure about this, but I think a slender border might be helpful too. As it is, the fog glides across the frame, and my eyes tend to trail with it, so a border would be a nice "stopping" point and cradle the image all together.
Two fairly minor points really. All in all this is an excellent capture, great composition, lovely imagery. Well done. I gave a 7.
What an awesome photo. The sillhoueted ingret and the ship looming in the distance. Minor suggestion...would clone out chain to ship and that stick to the left of the bird. Just minor thoughts though....love the photo.
You stand in the middle of a frozen body of water and wait for a ship to come, to pass the time? Hey, to each his/her own :-) All in all a very nice image.
Remarkable finish on this photo - I'd love to see what you started with. I imagine it was very atmospheric anyway, but if it wasn't heavily edited then this is amazing scene. Very nice shot.
This is a stunning shot, unfortunately I also give points for adherence to the theme - "Take a creative photograph that depicts something people do to pass the time." - the operative word here being people. Had this theme been "mist" I woulda given it a 10.
Brilliant atmosphere. I particularly love the bird (heron?) in the foreground and the way that the ship seems to rise from the mist. I like the title: who exactly is waiting, the bird or the ship's crew?
Just one thing, though. I can just make out a blob on the very left of the frame, about a third of the way down - dirty sensor or my monitor?
