Followed up on this photo, based upon your request in the forum. This is a very creative, artistic and unique photo. Those who have already commented on this photo, give you their honest opinion, and the reason why it didn't rate higher in DPC. There is a "look" that rates high in DPC, and this was not that look, but it is an amazing photo.
I would recommend you find a photo club in your area. You are talented, and could benefit from critique and feedback outside of DPC.
(Just read your post in the forums asking why this didn't score higher) Wow, I totally overlooked this one. Now that I really look at it, I must say I really love it. Artisticly, I think it's a 10 (if it's possible to assign a numerical score to anything artistic!). Technically, I think it's just fine, and an artistic shot like this is *above* technical criticism, anyway.
To answer your question about why it didn't score higher, I'd have to agree with the others about it being too "artsy" for DPC.
I just discovered this beauty. This is really amazing work. Thanks for doing what needed to be done! If you keep this up, you won't win many DPC ribbons, but your name will still be remembered as a great photographer in 200 years.
Something is in sync here. I'm happy to admit that I don't know what it is.
Everything I thought I've learnt, is off somewhere, irrelevantly afloat, sifting through lesser work it can get a handle on.
My people, look at this photo! It is so unassuming, it had to be created according to its own laws.
I agree with Imagineer. This photo really caought my breath and time just stopped. It make me want to be related to the subject in the photo. How come I didn't see this photo when I voted? I would definitely give it a 10.
:: Hello from the Critique Club :: ............................................................
Well, I looked at this and immediately had a flashback to an another era - like a surrealist from the 40s, perhaps even, dare I say, a Bill Brandt. For all the obvious (and deliberate) flaws and bucked conventions, this shot proves to be very memorable.
The pose for me shows a side of you that is slightly anarchic and resistant to the regular - which would not haved worked if the subject were to conform to the usual rules of cropping and composition. As such it has an indefinable X-factor which stands it apart from the crowd.
Like ubique, this was my only 10 of the challenge. There were other wonderful photos and I gave many 9's, but this photo blew me away. As I scrolled the results and got passed 20 or so, I thought this must have been disqualified for some reason. There was no other explanation for it not to be up there. Then finally here it was. Boo on the DPC voters (most of them anyway).
Adam: This was my only 10. It has an artistic purity and durability that is by comparison so pitifully absent in most of the images that finished higher, including my own. I hope you will be consoled (if indeed you require any consolation) by the fact that several of the most discriminating commentators in the DPC community recognised the quality of your photograph. I am not of course referring to myself, but if you examine the comments list below, you'll quickly pick them out. Then again, I guess you already have; it takes one to know one!
Adam?
Very interesting profile shot, great B&W with interesting softness and slight grain. The angle between body and head is pretty strange, but that makes it so interesting.
i don't know anything about portraiture, so i'm using your image to try to figure out what i think i would or wouldn't do in this situation, as well as what i notice and get out of your image.
this is a very interesting image you've turned in here. i'm really not sure what to make of the pose. the lighting and soft focus put more of the burden on the imagination of the viewer than a more traditional portrait, which may be exactly what you were after. good luck!
A classic image and one of the more powerful efforts because the end results gives this image a very impressive graphical effect while maintaining full integrity. Indeed one of the most impressive images in this challenge. Bumping up.
One of my favorites in this challenge. The contrast is just spot on. It is simple but yet very different. Excellent work. If it were for me to decide you would get the blue ribbon.
Terrific portrait. Original and visually arresting pose, great composition/crop, nicely executed in both camera and processing. No suggestions for improvement. 10.
The grain here actually work quite well. I love the composition too. It's clean & simple, yet very interesting. Great textures too. I would want it to be more sharp though. but it's top10 here. 9
I love this, it's so cool! The title is perfect, coupled with the tones and the way your skin ends up being the lightest tone in this photo...the pose is different, but looks awkwardly natural (?). You've done a great job with this one!
