Used a black backdrop, and lighting was a 100w lamp directly above it with a flashlight shinning from the left. Then I went crazy on it tweaking the saturation, levels, and a combo of Smart Blur, Unsharp Mask, Blur, USM, again to get the texture it has. Not sure if people will like it or not. :)

this seems really pixeled to me. I don't know if this was done on purpose, but it isn't my preference. The focus and clarity are ok I think, but with the pixelated texture, it's almost hard to tell. Lighting is nice, no distracting shadows or dark spots. I like where the shadows lay. good luck in the challenge.
I love your style. This has an older, fun feel to it. The focus is really off - I think you may have oversharpened it, but I'm sure the original is phenomenal.
