Challenge:Light (Advanced Editing IV) Camera:Sony DSC-F717 Location: Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA. The Needles Date: Jan 24, 2005 Aperture: F8 ISO: 100 Shutter: 1/640th Galleries:Candid, Seascapes Date Uploaded: Jan 30, 2005
aperture
1. An opening, such as a hole, gap, or slit.
2. A usually adjustable opening in an optical instrument, such as a camera or telescope, that limits the amount of light passing through a lens or onto a mirror.
3. The diameter of such an opening, often expressed as an f-number.
This was taken on a run I took on the beach January 24. I had no idea I would get such an image, but I had my camera along, just in case. I actaully didn't consider this image for the challenge until about a day before challenge (being that I took it the day after the challenge opened).
Editing: Lot of spot editing for foot steps in the sand, little bit of color adjustment (little magenta and red, and blue shadow), b&c, image size, usm, lil bump in saturation.

Wow... this is gorgeous! I'm heading out to an adventure soon. I need to remember this and set up some photography shots as opposed to just bird or landscape shots.
Just added this one to my favorites. Wow. Awesome color, composition, and mood to this beautiful shot. You have nailed the sunlight and brought out all the reflections and beach interest as well. I agree with someone below who said this needs to be on a magazine cover. You really should be entering this everyplace you can!
Congratulations for being the one God chose to click the shutter on this one :o)
I love this picture. I went and looked at your website and you have some awesome pictures! I'm from Oregon (moved to Florida in 98) and I used to go to Bandon all the time.... your photos make me terribly homesick :)
You have to be very proud of this image, I would like to see this on a cover of a photo magazine, I suggest you submit to Outdoor Photographer and others, I'm sure they would love it as well. Now I want to head down to the Oregon coast for a few days. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Thomas: This image is one of the most complete ones I have seen of a sunset. The quality of the radiance is very captivating and the silhoutte figure helps depict the magic of these warm tones. This capture has power and most important untold beauty. Congratulations on this exceptional effort.
Well done on snatching the F717 top spot too. What a fluke.
; )
I'd been watching my score all week according to that 7.69, I was on the border for most of the week: Low point - 173 votes: 7.6416. High point - 23 votes: 8.3478. I was at a 7.69 for most of the final day, but the last 10 votes/bumps realed me into a ending score of 7.7459 (244 votes), adjusted to a 7.764 final score.
Beautiful image! Wonderful colours and stunning foreground and background silhouette subjects. Great composition too. Also really like the alternative with the byciclist - that's a winner too.
woOt--blue #3--you are on a roll! such a beautiful image. i love the setting--it reminds me of barbados--and i love the 'photographer being photographed' concept. awesome. :)
Once again this is gorgeous. Though at this point I'll have to admit I can't wait for the time when we get to see you put your excellent skills to work on another landscape :P. I guess that's the curse of still being in school eh :). Good luck with your track season, and congrats on another beautiful image...not to mention the blue ribbon that goes with it.
now i wanna know how you could run with camera and tripod?
are you sure you weren't walking? ;)
brilliant shot of course!
Altough I have run with camera and tripod before (my Solitude shot was taken on a run back from being dropped off at Haystack), I didn't have a tripod this time, just my f717 in the camera bag clutched in an arm (alternated from time to time), and a slow-moderate pace. It does turn into a walk when I am shooting though =). I am training for Track season, but my passion for photography and love of running conflict. So this was is my temporary solution (in the future, I'd like to get a small camera that I could run more easily with though).
Thank you all for your votes and wonderful comments, I was not expecting to have this photo do so highly. This is simply the a view of the glory of creation.
Ansel Adams once said Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter. I believe that I'm here to capture God's glory and share it with others. So I hope you enjoy =)
Congrats on the blue. No offense or anything but you need to start taking photos of something else or start getting paid to take photos of Cannon Beach cause you are getting way to good at it. Quite an impressive collection building you must be! :)
This was the comment I made during the voting: "This is a stunner and I can't give it anything other than a 10. If this doesn't ribbon there's no justice. Perfect take on the challenge."
Superb exposure, great weather conditions and lovely composition. The feeling of depth is tangible with some lovely glistening reflections of the water.
However... this does not the meet the challenge even if I stretch my imagination to breaking point so I'm going to vote it [1] in absence of zero or minus figures. [1]
I mean where the f**k is the Light in this shot?
Seriously - this has been shoe-horned into the challenge. So it's rubbish.
Nothing good about it at all. It's not even worth the pixels that have been gathered to create the perception of contiunous tones. Zeeeeero. Nil. Good luck though - I think you're going to need it with a vaguely appropriate subject such as this...
Beautiful misty light..
Including the figure works very well in my opinion as it adds another focal point and also helps in judging scale and distance.
I`m sure I`ve seen this seascape many times in past challenges..but this version is one of the best so far.
I'll be shocked if this isn't blue!
It would be a lovely shot as just a landscape, but the photographer adds that little extra and gives us all something we can relate to : )
Well done by adding the element of a silhouette in this beautiful photograph. I think it adds to the photo giving it more depth. I wonder what his picture turned out like? Great Job 10
This is very impressive and deceptively simple. It's a nice scene, which most of us might have dressed up with a strolling or pensive figure in silhouette. A clever few might have thought to make the figure a photographer, perhaps even with a tripod, to more fully embrace this challenge subject. But the spread (human) legs were a rare inspiration, and lift this image way above the usual sunrise/sunset shot. Great work. 9
Second opinion: My prediction for blue ribbon (could be the kiss of death; my top picks usually finish back in the pack!)
Your photo leads us as viewers through at least five different light openings, 1) the atmospheric aperture (clouds); 2) the geological aperture (rock formations); 3) the physical aperture of the human body (man's legs); 4) the technological (tripod & camera); and 5) the optical aperture (the unseen eye of the photographer, and eye of the camera). The interplay between the disc of the sun contrasted with the diamond of light formed by the photographer's legs & tripod are brilliant. Clearly evident also is the intensity of focus in the man's stance, to get his large frame into the eye of his camera to do what every photographer attempts to do: set the aperture to capture the impossible, the speed and beauty of light! I love the overlooked shadows of resting birds resting atop the rocks, one to the left and several to the right. An extraordinary photo! 10
Oh Good Grief...I was all relaxed and just casually voting when this one came up....I am now sitting straight up in my chair, lol. If this doesn't ribbon I will completely give up on trying to figure it out...Smashingly Stunning!!!!! I give it an 11.
I'll be surprised if this doesn't win, certainly of what i've seen so far. Very good work, although personally I struggle to see much more than sheer technical excellence in it. It doesn't move me.
With or without the photog in the foreground, this is simply magical. I would love to see the untouched original for this to see what kind of PP went into it. This should ribbon, and I would be surprised if it doesn't. 10
Good shot. I presume this is yet another one byZoomdak. I like how you included the other photographer instead of just doing another sunset/landscape shot. Great colour.
That you, zoom? Nice capture, whoever it is. I need to find a nit, so the furthest-forward blown-out reflection would be better eliminated I believe :-)
Brilliant shot! Okay, who has a significant other sneaking up behind and shooting a picture of his/her partner trying to get this shot. Sneaky, sneaky.
Sweet Picture. Bravo! 10
