I layed out a few garbage bags downstairs and poured some soil across it. The helmet is an actual army helmet and the hand is mine painted up with some poster paint. A fog machine was sprayed to get the smoke.

DAMN... Powerful image and beautifully presented. I completely agree with blemt's comments about the fact that it could be any war, any person, at any time. A very timely and timeless shot.
i really feel that the point of photography is to stir an emotion when you see the photo and this picture really struck a cord in my heart... thankyou!
Excellent work Joey. Are you in a school for gifted students? You really should be. Or better yet, find yourself a mentor, someone you admire, in your area and become his/her assistant. That way, you can earn yourself a camera worth your artistic abilities. It should be easy to convince a smart person to take you in based on the few pictures in your portfolio here, especially the quality you produce from the camera you use.Tricking someone is one thing, but being good is quite another.
Thank you for the excellent advice and compliments! Right now I work at an internet-affiliate place building their web sites but it's pretty boring and doesn't really let me do anything creative but make banners and sidebars in photoshop. But, I also teach art lessons to younger children. I have an exibit at the local art gallery with mostly some paintings and a few photographs. During the summer I was planning apply to the local newspaper as a photographer and also try the cable company because I love film and video more than anything and there is so much I want to learn in that field. So yep, theres my scoop... I also paint murals and some yearbook photography in my school for my community hours of service! (In Canada you need 40 to pass highschool.)

I'm a big fan of photojournalistic images that tell a story. This one does that perfectly. It has a timeless feel to it, could be any war, any country, any time. (Well not quite any time cause the helmet design is wrong, but you get my gist.) Nice job with the modeling, and the hint of smoke. It's a little on the dark side (not subject wise, but light wise) and might be worth bumpin up a notch in density. 10
I like the concept, but this doesn't look real to me. The paper seems so clean compared to the arm and the mist looks very much like it was added in post.
Interesting. I cannot relate to the background that well, but it is a very good concept. Some more damage and dirt on the in and outside of the helmet might work. I like the smoke, but a bit more intense could be better. 8
I wish this photo was in another contest because it would have received a 10. I just don't see this as normal human activity. dieing for your country doesn't seem in the catagory of "normal" to me even though it's going on right now.
