Doesn't grab me, as it's a pretty common theme. To make something like this really pop there needs to be something about it that is unusual (or unusually beautiful) for this type of shot, whether it be in the light, what the creature is doing, etc. That said, I do like the colors very much.
Very beautiful mix of colors with nice, bright natural light. I would have liked to have seen the entire butterfly in sharp focus fading to the soft background, but a great job anyway.
beautiful work! i'm sure you had a lot of fun taking it. you know that feeling you get, when the opportunity's there and you get the shot set up, the one you've been patiently waiting for, then you pop the shutter, but the lighting is isn't good enough to preview it in the lcd, and you have to wait until you get home, but you just know you got it, and then, it comes up on your computer screen and all you can do is smile and hiss, "yessss". i might be wrong, but that's what i think happened here. thanks for sharing, good luck in the challenge!
I had something like this (in a landscape portrayal) on my wall for a long time. It too had an orange butterfly with a purple/green background. I don't know what it is, but these bright colors and especially the orange vs green/purple works refreshing, as if spring is just around the corner (while they just announce a -10 C temperature for the next week).
The shallow dof always works great with these kinds of shots, but with butterflies I think it is important to keep the petals extending from the head in focus. You did a good job with this one. 8
