I set up some white foam board behind me and used an Alien Bees 800 strobe to light it. I put a second Alien Bees 800 strobe directly to my right (left side in photo) with a Brolley box. I placed another piece of white foam board to my left (right in the photo) to fill in my dark side. The camera was tripod mounted, with a Sigma 500 DG Super flash with Stofen Omnibounce pointed at the ceiling. The flash was set on manual at 1/64th power, and I used it to trip the Alien Bees, and to also provide a little fill flash to the front of my face. Photo taken using wired remote.
Exposure mode: Manual, ISO 200, 1/250 sec, f 13.0

Not a darts player then - at least, not any good - not with that grip :-)
I like the intensity of that stare, like the high-key work, like the light on the hand and face. Overall, the image doesn't do a lot for me - and i think that's a compositional issue - the closeness of the hand and the dart to the face, without being directly in front, seems awkward, unreal; and yet doesn't have a natural balance of attention through the frame tthat makes it comfortable despite that. technically, in terms of light and focus and all that stuff, it wonderfully done. But I think the actual set-up itself lacks drama, lacks immediacy. It feels like a posed photograph, in other words, rather than communicating the imminent launch of the dart.
like the lbacklit subject here, but decent light on the subject itself... the expression in his eyes do add a lot to the picture. You could have improve it further if the dart was aiming more in front than facing down IMO
Wow if it is not the blast from the past. Been looking for you JD. It is me TurboTech. I guess I am the one missing from the site now that I think about it.
I left a message in one of your Pbase Folders. We just had a baby.
I will be back to comment more.
