This is a remake of Mark Wiley's Low Key Cowboy I love the play with light and shadow.
The most difficult part was to find the right size, distance and angle of the light source. I used a 15 cm spot at approx 20 degrees to my right, with the camera 60 degrees to my left. The hat is an Australian Akubra hat which is a bit more flat then Mark's hat, so shows less shadow.
I had a printed version of the original on the ground in front of me and the phone as a remote control (with live view of the camera image) in my hand, so I could see the light and shadows. It required very careful movements to get it close to the original.
Post processing:
* lower overall exposure
* background and shirt increase shadow to almost black
* crop
* vignette
* sharpen
* resize for dpc
