crazy shot .. i have never seen a fly let alone photographed one with its proboscis fully extended .. i wondered what that end bit was called ..
labellum noun - the fleshy tip of the proboscis (modified labium) used for sopping up liquids, present in some groups of flies.
What does the labellum do in insects?
The labellum surface is covered by minute food channels, formed by the interlocking elongate hypopharynx and epipharynx, forming a proboscis used to channel liquid food to the esophagus. The food channel draws liquid and liquefied food to the esophagus by capillary action.
What are blow flies good for?
The beneficial aspects of blowflies are viewed anthropocentrically. Despite the problems that blowflies cause man, and the disgust they engender, they play a valuable role as pollinators of some plants in horticulture and can increase seed yields.
